4 A.M. Tuesday Morning
It was four a.m. on Tuesday morning of this week. A 15-year-old stole a car in Minneapolis. Another 15-year-old was in the passenger seat. Five more teenagers were jammed into the back seat.
The driver slammed into a semi. Three of the teenagers died, including the driver and front seat passenger. The other four were hospitalized with injuries. The driver of the truck was ok.
There is so much wrong with this story. 15-year-olds, on a school night, stealing cars at 4 a.m. is a symptom of many things going wrong.
One of them is not taking seriously enough the fact of 15-year-olds stealing cars. These cases should not be dismissed or diverted if there is sufficient evidence. There are not that many kids out there acting that stupidly with so little parental supervision, and the few that are doing it need to be incapacitated. Not forever. Not for ten years, even. But they need to be charged, adjudicated, and kept from creating this kind of mayhem.
