The most intriguing teams in all of Britain...
Most Americans have at least a passing familiarity with the top-tier soccer league in Britain, the Premier League. Certainly, there are plenty of goofy names in that league (ie, Sheffield Wednesday, Tottenham Hotspur), but some of my favorites come from the leagues below that top tier.
For example, in the Championship League one below the Premier League, we find Plymouth Argyle and Stoke City, and in the 1st League (which is really the 3rd division) we've got:
Blackpool
Bolton Wanderers
Leyton Orient
Shrewsbury Town
Wigan Athletic
and another set of Wanderers, from Wycombe
Below that, in League Two, we've got some that really need an explanation:
Doncaster Rovers (too bad they won't meet the Wanderers)
Fleetwood Town
Grimsby Town
Milton Keyes Dons
The league below that is inexplicably called the National League, and there we find:
AFC Fylde
Dagenham & Redbridge
Sollihull Moors
Woking
Yeovil Town
Out of them all, I think I most want to see "Yeovil Town."

I want to see Woking! Picturing a group of unshaven guys rubbing their eyes and yawning, or players wearing jerseys that not only have their last name and number on the back, but also their preferred pronouns…
I love these names as well, many with fascinating histories. A good friend is involved with Leyton Orient (Go O's!). This is the histoy behind thier name (adpted from LO website). Leyton Orient: Leyton is the section of NE London where the team is located. Leyton is an Anglo-Saxon name, simply meaning 'settlement on the River Lea'. The Orient part comes from the Orient Shipping Company (later acquired by P&O), employer of some of the players in the club's amateur days. Originally founded as Eagle Cricket Club in 1886, they became Orient Football Club two years later, and then Clapton Orient in 1898. A move to east London in 1937 prompted a further change to the modern appellation, Leyton Orient.
