PMT: The worst of the pandemic

Something remarkable and awful happened on Wednesday in Waco: With over 500 new covid cases, it was the worst day for new infections in the entire pandemic for McLennan County. Of those new infections, over 200 were in people under the age of 20-- a shocking figure driven by school starting two weeks ago, in the absence of mask and vaccine mandates in some of the school systems. 191 patients were hospitalized for covid, representing a huge strain on the medical system there. The death toll in that not-so-large county is over 500.

How bad is it?

One middle school in the county had two teachers die of covid in the past few weeks. That prompted them to close the school, at least temporarily.

The absurd politicization of common sense public health measures is to blame for this disaster. McLennan County has a vaccination rate of only 45% of those over 12 who are eligible.  This was avoidable. Selfishness made it inevitable.

Comments:
It appears that with Delta anyone can catch it and carry it whether they are vaccinated or not, think chickenpox in terms of spread. And having covid once does not prevent someone from getting it again.

The difference is the vaccinated (without diabetes, obesity, immune suppressed disorders and other health issues) should not end up hospitalized. The vaccinated with health issues may end up hospitalized but ultimately have a good outcome. An unvaccinated with any of the listed health conditions may not make it out of the hospital.

The vaccine is such a simple solution at the very least preventing serious illness or death. What is equally perplexing is that once testing positive many are turning to the 'emergency use' monoclonal antibodies which work.

Vaccination is an IQ test. Stupid isn’t curable, ignorance is. Unfortunately the stupid are killing those who can’t be vaccinated for medical or age reasons. I would like to see the refusers fired, refused medical insurance for COVID related illness, and a universal mask mandate with heavy fines and jail time after the third fine.

For the first time in my life I’m ashamed to be a Texan - and I’m a 6th generation Texan. Abortion, voting rights, no permit carry - the list seems endless.

We the People seem to have decided that it is more important to protect our dear “beliefs” and “principles” than it is each other, particularly if convenience is to be sacrificed. Maybe that’s putting it too mildly. Sandy Hook might have proved once and forever that We just don’t care about folks with whom we don’t share a roof.

Christine-- that was always true. After all, vaccines don't form a shield around us-- they instead allow our body to fight off infection, which means that vaccinated people will have the virus but they just fight it off and it does little or no damage.

Correct but people seem to have forgotten as much. They believe this vaccine will keep them from getting covid and when they develop a breakthrough case and reality strikes home, well... they are disheartened and wonder what they did wrong while the anti-vaxxers trumpet that the vaccine doesn't work.
