Political Mayhem Thursday: The Biden surge

I'm reading a lot of the same narrative about the Democratic primaries, which centers on the following:

-- With Beto, Buttigieg, and Klobuchar's support, and Bloomberg's money, Biden now has what it will take to outlast Bernie Sanders and win the nomination.

-- Biden also is looking well-situated to stitch together a coalition of black and suburban voters that would allow him to win the general election.

That may all be true.

What I worry about is the all of this movement has had almost nothing to do with, well, Biden. It has to do with other people (Jim Clyburn, etc.) or shifting attitudes or good timing. But it doesn't seem that Biden has done anything to really spur these events. And that worries me.

Comments:
I feel like Biden needs a vision of change, not just returning to the where we were in 2016 before this mess began. Just not as much change as Bernie presents. I would be happy with righting the ship but I need more. While I think many of Bernie's ideas have merit there will be no magic wand waved that magically makes these ideas a reality. If the Dems win in November it will take a good 2 or 3 years to stabilize the ship. If the Dems win the Senate then things can move more quickly. I am viewing Joe or Bernie as transition President due to their respective age. I had hoped that a younger candidate would emerged this round.

It doesn't mean the President and Congress can't work on enacting more progressive policies. And that includes Clemency and Pardons policy. Canceling Executive Orders will be a start as they relate to the environment. Reversing the tax cuts. Congress can work on bringing down the cost of pharmaceutical, and broadening affordable access to health care, etc...

It is easier to tear down a structure than it is to reassemble it to meet the needs of many.

I have no comment to add on this except that I am deeply disappointed by the lack of Heathcliff in today's post.

Totally agree with you, Christine, about what could be done in the next four years under Joe or Bernie.

Also agree that Biden's anointment seems somehow not right and you've hit the nail on the head, Mark: Biden is really just a vessel for all the other factors you've cited. He's a vessel, a vehicle, a figurehead, whatever you want to call it, which could be fine once elected but the problem is getting elected. Only Joe can be on a debate stage in person with Trump. It's Joe who'll be doing interviews and impromptu speeches. He seems a bit feeble to me, emotionally and occasionally mentally, and I'm worried about that.

Warren just dropped out. I hope she guards carefully any endorsement she might be considering. She could help either candidate get elected, possibly Joe more than Bernie. It's hard to imagine her wanting to be VP, but I wish she could be his "translator" or somehow get melded into his plans . . . some of Liz's plans put forward by Joe, perhaps.
