In Memphis
I'm in Memphis for the 50th anniversary of Dr. Martin Luther King's death here. There is a sadness to that, of course. Last night we had a dinner at the Lorraine Motel, where the murder happened. It is locked in time, preserved as a 1960's motor inn; it's almost like you expect people to check in.
It was really an honor to be a part of this; if you look at the speaker bios, it's pretty clear I was the admission department's mistake (once again). I think I did all right, though; it helped to be on a panel next to Roy Austin, who did great work on the issues I care about in the Obama administration-- several times, it was Roy we were meeting with while pushing for more clemency (and, as he notes in the panel discussion, they did grant over 1700). Also, at the end, there is a pretty memorable "this question is for the white guy" moment...

What a great honor to be part of such a panel. You have chosen a more humble path but that does not negate your many accomplishments and great work. Keep up the good work.
