The women's frozen four!

You may have missed this, but last weekend Clarkson won the NCAA women's hockey championship right here in Minneapolis, defeating the Colgate Lady Grifters 2-1.

This is the third championship since 2014 for Clarkson, a relatively small school in Potsdam, New York, with about 4500 students. They play in division III in every sport except hockey-- and they are really, really good at hockey. Their roster includes a lot of Canadians.

I tried to locate some information about Colgate, too. Other than the questionable claims that the school "was founded in 1991 with a generous grant from the estate of Theodor Geisel," and "counted among its alumni all of the members of the Starland Vocal Band," (see them in the video below) I couldn't find much about Colgate online, though.

The all-Eastern final was unusual, in that since the women's NCAA hockey championship was begun in 2001, it has been won only three times by a team from the East-- and all three times, that champion was Clarkson. Curiously, there have only been three other champions: Minnesota has won 6 times, Minnesota-Duluth has won 5 times, and Wisconsin has won 4 times.

Comments:
Must have been a typo that did not get corrected. Or maybe it was the founding date of the TEAM?

Not sue how to best understand this scandalous, fake news blog. Some plausible theories:

Mark, while rocking out to the greatest hits of Bread (kinda gross), had an encounter with a tree while skiing in the Wyoming back country. Concussion protocol not being observed. IPLaw Guy did the best he could.

Last week there was a secret meeting in the backroom of a dimly lit, rank smelling Edina bar (is there another kind?) between Mark and nefarious representatives from Clarkson. After loosening-up their target with one too many Leinie’s, there was the transfer of an unmarked envelope containing a signed copy of the original Spinal Tap CD into Mark’s possession. An 80’s DJ has his price.

Pickles is holding Mark hostage and she has remotely taken over blog.

1 & 2 are plausible, but everyone knows that Pickles the Cat is a huge fan of the Vermont Catamounts. Because... you know, cats.

It IS pretty cool that the Starland Vocal Band went to Colgate, though.

A thorough neurological exam is clearly indicated … before the concussion syndrome fully takes hold; might need to poke a few holes through the un-brushed hair to ease the pressure on the frontal lobe, ASAP.

Where are you getting this? Starland neither attended or nor performed at Colgate. Although Orleans performed there in that era … along with the Dead, Springsteen, and Fleetwood Mac. Unlike the North Country schools, and the Big Ten, Colgate has standards. Annually among the national leaders in team GPA for athletes.

Although, unfortunately, there are painful, long suppressed memories (and associated gnashing of teeth) of Afternoon Delight being played on the Juke box at Hickey’s Tavern back in the day.

Of note: Two of the three inventors of Trivial Pursuit are Colgate hockey players.

Why is the Colgate team the "Lady Grifters?" A very strange and demeaning name. The Colgate website says that the the teams are the "Raiders" (until 2006 the "Red Raiders" until, I suspect, a surge of political correctness led to a change.)

Another fake news, fictitious Oslerian creation (see concussion syndrome). The women’s hockey team is referred to as “The Raiders,” as is any other team at Colgate, without a gender specifier (i.e.- the Lady Raiders). Colgate teams were known as the “Red Raiders” up until sometime in the late 70’s early 80’s, when the school dropped the “Red.” It was a perception thing. The Red Raiders had nothing to do with Native Americans; red referenced the color of the band uniforms back in the 30’s (+/-) … albeit the school colors are maroon, grey and white. Go figure.

The Raiders coach, Greg Frago, has been named Coach of the Year for Women’s Division 1 Ice Hockey.

Hmmm.... CraigA, I thought that it might be good to poke fun at Colgate without a toothpaste joke! But... seriously, everyone, Colgate is a fine school with a national reputation for its excellent Hotel and Restaurant Management School and location high above Lake Cayuga. Founded by Ezra Colgate in 1865, it is known for its beautiful setting in the Finger Lake region. Most recently, it has opened a new tech campus on New York City's Roosevelt Island, known as Colgate Tech. One thing that has never made sense to me, though, is Colgate's song:

High above Cayuga's waters
There's an awful smell
Some say it's Cayuga's waters
Some say it's Colgate.

Oh, Lord ...

Well, I'm pretty sure that's the song...

Hey Prof, a correction is in order...it is Cornell Tech not Colgate Tech that has a brand spanking new campus on Roosevelt Island. Here, have look at mayor Bloomberg's little project, it is beautiful:

Ah! A lot of this makes more sense now...
