Tragedy in Texas
It has been heartbreaking to watch the damage done by Hurricane Harvey in Texas. It isn't over yet, either-- there is a chance that the storm might take another run at the shoreline after passing back over the Gulf of Mexico. It seems malicious!
It is especially had to see the damage to Port Aransas, where I have had some great times with Henry Wright and others over the years. But it is too early to know how much damage has been done, in part or in whole. I think this will be a story that will play out over years, much like Katrina.

The warming of the environment is contributing to this. The outer bands of the circulation, to the south and east of the eye, are picking up moisture from the warm Gulf, which has surface temps approximately 90 degrees F. That is where all the rain water is sourced. Were the Gulf a bit cooler, there would be less moisture, therefore less energy and less rain fall in the storm.
And not even the evacuation routes are above water. Bad engineering of even the interstates, which put them below surface level to save some $$$ rather than elevating them. During the last major evacuation of Houston, there were many people who died in the evacuation!
