Political Mayhem Thursday: It's Say-Something-Nice-About-The-Other-Candidate Day!
I've got a challenge for everyone today: Say something nice about the candidate for President that you don't support. So, if you a Romney kind of gal, say something nice about Obama. If (like me), you favor President Obama, say something nice about Gov. Romney. Here, I'll go first:
In 1998, the Organizing Committee for the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City was dragged down in a bribery scandal. To move forward, they brought in Mitt Romney as the new President and CEO, and he did a spectacular job. The Olympics themselves were well-organized and successful-- the largest winter Olympics ever, with 10 more events than in the previous winter games. Not only were the games themselves pronounced by the head of the IOC to be "flawless," but the event generated a surplus of $40 million, which has been used to maintain the Olympic venues for use by the public. It was an unmitigated success.
I remember at the time thinking that Mitt Romney was a strong leader, and admired the work he did under trying circumstances. I can't understand why this is not more often emphasized in his campaign, as it is an experience that replicates many of the challenges a president would face.
Ok-- now you go!

I think that Mittens would really bring a certain firm guiding paw to the White House that's been missing in the scattershod direction of the last few administrations.
Also, he would probably help boost domestic colored twine production.

Mitt Romney cannot be too bad given that he grew up as the son of a popular political figure father, a rara avis these days type of Republican…fiscally conservative but socially moderate. A father who opposed his fellow Republicans who questioned the civil rights movement at the time, a father who supported the Vietnam war initially but reevaluated his position after visiting the war zone. The example of his father’s lessons in shaping his political persona was perhaps reflected in his Massachusetts health-care plan as a mix of common sense and personal responsibility. The hope is he remembers his father’s lesson on reevaluating a position when faced with a different reality (I guess this would be the adaptability Mr. Osler Dad mentions). Plus Mitt Romney cannot be too bad given that he was a Mormon missionary in France. Let me reiterate, a Mormon missionary in France, a culture so steeped in tradition they get apoplectic if you call one of their A.O.C. sausages by the wrong name… how much more braver than that! He does have great hair, but still what an unfortunate name Mitt…really, Mitt. What is that?
President Obama is a great family man. He is a great speaker, who makes us proud as he tours the world and entertains foreign leaders and represents what is possible in America. He is a bright fellow, who feels very comfortable in the company of intellectuals. He is a very good writer and, generally, understands well the power of words. He has a very nice smile.
I'll give Obama full credit for exerting pressure on college football to move toward a playoff. That may be his greatest legacy.
Mitt Romney is a devoted family man who has taught his children the importance of helping others. I recall a TV news item where a friend of one of Romney's sons needed help in rebuilding his home after a disaster of some sort (tornado? fire? I can't recall). Mr. Romney and his son showed up and put in a full day to help. This occurred while he was in the middle of one of the most grueling primary campaigns for president ever witnessed. Yet no reporters or TV news crew was in tow; he just came and helped and then went on his way because it was the right thing to do.
Let me add that the story of Romney and his son helping a friend rebuild his home was publicized ONLY because the friend put it out there. Mr. Romney has never spoke of it.
Mitt went to my HS. He has good hair.
When he talks he sounds almost exactly like the dog on Fetch with Ruff Ruffman This Kids Science Show spencer watches.
Obama is freaking awesome though.
I might ahve gotten a job today if I choose to accept it. Its not with Nerds. So that is a Plus. it is selling which plunges me head first into the land of well-dressed Guys with HUUUGE watches and other ManJewelry.
I kind of dont want it, and do... so... I dont know..

Comments here seem to reflect the struggle we have to find positive characteristics in individuals who don't share our political perspectives.
I will add to the conversation that to many Americans Mr. Romney represents the success of a capitalist economic system. He has a great business mind and the 2002 Olympic Games and his companies successes reflect his drive and hard work. Also, he passed the Massachusetts Health Care bill - how can progressives not love that?

It is kind of disappointing. I happen to think that we are blessed with a lot of talented people in this country who still want to pursue public service, like both Obama and Romney-- kind of remarkable, given what poison one must endure to enter that fray.

Sorry, Mark, I wrote something about Romney but it was too snarky, so I erased it. Can't do it. You stumped me with this one.
Alright, I will be more serious, and I don't think it is all that challenging. Obama deserves credit for killing Osama Bin Laden. He deserves a lot of credit. He continued the pursuit of that international terrorist and murderer when he could've easily given up and claimed it wasn't that important to capture one man when we are fighting a war with so many others. He crossed into Pakistan despite the risks. And he took a shot with good but not perfect intel. That took guts and foresight and smarts, and he deserves a ton of credit for that.

I agree with RRL. And I should have talked up foreign policy earlier. I think "soft power" has succeeded. I could be left-handed in my compliment & credit Hillary & Bob Gates, which I do, but the buck stops with the Pres.
Romney is really quite moderate, and I wish his party would let him be himself because that's not a bad thing.
Obama is also quite moderate, but I wish his party had more spine to it and would support him.
Our country is in it deep and I wish we could decide to work together instead of just trying to one-up our perceived opponents.

He has a great name,if you're a dog or a cat..."Mitt," "Mitty","Mittens." Dogs love to have wind blowing in their fur,so it was ingenious of him to place the dog kennel on top of his car to give his dog a little fresh air and an unexpected adventure.

Though I personally am an Episcopalian,I like his choice of religion and that he believes in God.I have a sister-in-law who is Mormon and like that Mormons do believe in helping their fellow human beings when they are down and out and ailing. He has good teeth,unlike the Duchess,who is dentally challenged like her other British compatriots. People ought to strive for dental perfection. And perhaps flip-flopping on certain issues might be construed as flexibility. I tried...I really did!
