Up now at CNN.com...

They put this piece up at the top of the home page, and between 2 am and 6:30 am it got over 600 comments-- most of them angry. And you should see the emails I'm getting!

Yikes.

Comments:
Here's a positive comment - it was a brave thing to post. Thank you for posting it.

Home run.

Here's a positive comment for you.

On Memorial Day I get to go to a wedding shower for a friend from high school who is marrying another woman. I was so sad that I would miss their wedding in Seattle, but I get to share in their joy in just a few days.

My friend lost her mom just a couple of months before I lost mine. Her decision to participate in the sacrament of marriage comes only a couple of months after I participated in the sacrament of confirmation.

Great exposure for a nicely crafted, very personal argument. My mind is numb after reading all that commentary, some so epically inane it only goes to prove that stupidity is a fascinating subject indeed, for unlike knowledge or reason which have limits, the realm of inane is truly boundless...a lesson in and of itself. There were a few sensible divergent comments but I have to say my personal favorite was the one that challenged your downstream metaphor with an equally valid upstream argument.

I thought your article was great, and it was accessible and easy to read for people who are not necessarily familiar with scripture. I don't know how you deal with all the negative comments from some of the people on CNN, I'm not sure I could do it. Voicing your opinion as you do is very brave; whether somebody agrees with you or not, people will respect what you say for being extremely well, and bravely expressed. Keep writing.

You are also a tremendously good and easy to understand law professor.

Someday in the not too distant future, we will look back on our denial of equal rights to our gay and lesbian brothers and sisters with the same shame with which we view Jim Crow laws. Whites only water fountains and swimming pools--water denied.

First - let me say that I enjoyed your piece on CNN.com

What bothers me is that so many people are up in the middle of the night trolling web sites to make comments.

Marta has stated some of my thoughts quite well. Inane... Perhaps because they are sleep deprived.

Seriously these people need to seek help for a various number of reasons including sleep disorders. I personally have an intimate relationship with the inside of my eyelids between 11pm and 6am most nights. And I highly recommend it for ones' general wellbeing and sanity.

After reading just a few of the comments I think that it's plenty clear that people think they are reading, but they are not. They have their bigotries and fears and prejudices in place, and instead of thinking about what you are saying, they react by saying your agrument lacks validity. They make no counter-argument other than saying your parallel argument is invalid. They vest their bigotry in Christian righteousness, but they would be wrong. They cannot dominate their hate for Gays other than rejecting them outright. Very sad, really.

Osler i told you not to piss off the Panda Community....

With respect to Peter---the other situation you might have discussed was Peter's dream in which he sees the sheet come down from Heaven laden with all the non-Kosher foods that Leviticus decrees forbidden and God says for Peter to kill and eat,and again (just as when Peter refuses to wash The Lord's feet),Peter says no. And God says if I have made something acceptable, don't say it isn't.This passage would argue against the many laws of Leviticus, which have focused on law and not on the accepting love of God.

Mark; Well said. Empathic poetry.I am extremely proud of you. Dad
