Joy of Tweeting (@Oslerguy)

At the commutation conference we had a few weeks ago, Dafna Linzer encouraged me to start using Twitter to spread the word about the blog and some of my other writings. I had avoided Twitter because it seemed like 140 characters is just not enough to do anything worthwhile, but I had undervalued the benefit of sending links out this way.

So... now I am hooked. I'm wondering if and how others out there use Twitter, and what your experience has been. It seems like a pretty inefficient way to keep in touch with individuals, but not a bad way to follow the news... but that just might be based on the people I have chosen to follow thus far.

In the meantime, meet me on Twitter-- @Oslerguy is my twittername. Or whatever that is called...

Comments:
I adore Twitter! If you like to write (and you do!), it's the perfect medium. You can link to things--your own or other people's--and it forces you to be brief.

Hope you like it, too. I've found that most people are either Twitter people or Facebook people.

I use Twitter for a few different purposes:
1) To receive news, as you mentioned. Ironically (sadly?), I have read news flashes about my own institution on multiple occasions via Twitter sooner than I found out "officially" through internal communication.
2) To share feedback about places and things. Rather than repeat the same info to multiple people, I can say it all at once to several.
3) To vent. Honestly, even though it's a more public venue than even Facebook, I feel a bit more liberty to speak my mind on Twitter. It's like being in a crowded restaurant talking with a group of friends - there is chatter all around you, so your voice doesn't stand out above the rest to draw unwanted attention to yourself.
4) Outreach. I help lead the social media efforts for my church, and I enjoy the challenge of writing daily prayer prompts within the 140-character limit.

I blog, FB and e-mail with my friends and I tweet with the birds. Fortunately my life does not require a handheld devise be permanently attached to my hand. I will be one of the few people in the world who doesn't develop a repetitive thumb use injury.

Tweet, Tweet....

OK, I'm confused about twitter. I have two followers, one of whom is a porn star. What am I supposed to do on twitter? I guess I'll try the four ideas, above!

I do not TWEET. Maybe because I am not fully WIRED or whatever I only ahve a Nook Tablet and a DUMB PHONE. As in not Smart phone.

I facebook. I email. I do not TWEET.

My Creo en Dios! blog posts automatically gets posted on Twitter, but other than that, I never use it.

I am already addicted hopelessly to Facebook, and now you want me on Twitter? Aren't you supposed to be encouraging me in more productive behavior,as a fellow pilgrim? Sheesh. Whatever happened to wandering blissfully in the verdant meadow unplugged? And,inquiring minds want to know,do you ever sleep,Professor?

Twitter is a GREAT way to follow a baseball game. I can sit with my kids and follow the comments via blackberry.
