Shopping advice needed!

I'm in the market for a new bag to use for travel. I have been using a raggedy black backpack, and it is time to upgrade to something slightly more professional. I like the style of a messenger bag, and it seems like a good practical shape for my needs-- I can jam my laptop and some other stuff in there and go.

Here are my two leading candidates. The top one is from Cole-Haan (the "Bayshore Casual Messenger), and the lower one is from LL Bean [click on an image to enlarge it]. Which should I get?

Comments:
Top one.

Why the top one?

I'd say the top one too. The bottom one is just slightly more ordinary looking. And it buckles shut which is inconvenient and if the buckle is just for show and it's actually a snap, well, that's just sort of phony. And I prefer the darker color but that seems irrelevant. Have you looked at Filson's? Not to add trouble...

Agreed: top one. It just looks more luxe.

I was going to say exactly what S said. I want to know more about the fasteners, especially if you're going to have to open it at airport security.

NAW has a nice one, but I'm not sure where he got it. Not that you want to be bag twins or anything.

What is "Filson's?"

Top one, purely because, not having seen the other one,I was immediately sold. It will engender much praise and cause pithy delectable conversation. It tells me that the man who owns it has impeccable standards and might just have something to say for himself. It shows value for the old and the new all at once. It will look good with tweed. And paisley. Go for it,Professor!

Does J.Peterman's have one in case they run out before you make your decision? See remarks on FB.

Ahh, a subject I am confident to address in this esteemed blogging community. I prefer the top bag as well. Cole Haan products are usually comfortably functional, well-made and easy to upkeep. The advice regarding ease of entry/exit is important. Also, if you are transporting a laptop in your case, make sure it has a padded pocket. I adore the old leather case we have from the market in Athens. It's 19 years old and has darkened nicely with age. Happy travels Mark.

I vote for the bottom one … with few years of use … several spilled coffees, mustard and ketchup stains, and the application of body grease through wear and tear … it will make you look like a real professor.

The top one looks too nice … a bit pretentious … it does not look like you.

Alternate options would be a Red Wings hockey bag or a monogrammed LL Bean canvas tote in your school colors.

Filson's:

Per CraigA's desire for you to look like a "real" professor (just so you know I was already buying it), they wear in really well.

If the link doesn't work it's filson.com

I like the top one (the look of it). I can vouch for getting a high quality leather bag and longevity. Ultimately great value for the $$$. Buy they right bag and it will not let you down.

I bought a leather backpack at Wilson's in 1991. It has travelled the world and will be with me at least another 20 years.

I vote for the top one too. But if you're in for a more youthful flair and a less staid, professorial luxe you may consider TUMI. Their bags are just as well made as Cole Haan, equally fancy and pricey and get this (my favorite actually)...they're made from lightweight abrasion-proof ballistic nylon fabric !?! with leather accents. Anyway, I personally hate lugging around weight that is not translated into something I use...and unless the leather for this bag is glove thin and feather light, I'd go...well, ballistic.

I can only speak to L.L. Bean regarding their backpacks, but as a mom of five boys, I can attest that they really do hold up ... they survived an entire school year, which is far more than can be said of any "cheap" backpacks that we've bought elsewhere.

What's wrong with the HEB Shopping bag you were using?

IPLG, I do have to admit that I did do the HEB bag thing sometimes (for those of you not in Texas, HEB was the only grocery store in Waco).

How aboutthis one?

Too smooth and looks heavy. The other one looked worn and friendly.

Man purse. I like the top one. When in Europe I carry a Landsend Squarerigger softside man purse. Works great.

Try this on for size before deciding: http://www.landsend.com/pp/CarryonTripTote~210490_-1.html?bcc=y&action=order_more&sku_0=::KSA&CM_MERCH=IDX_Luggage-_-CarryonLuggage&origin=index
