Haiku Friday: Summer Desserts (with a prize!)
If I'm not careful, I will be as big as a house soon, because I am surrounded by great desserts. (I have been saved only by that week of stoop labor in Oklahoma). Right now in my kitchen, the following lie in wait for me:
1 cupcake
9 oatmeal/chocolate chip cookies
1 carton of Blue Bunny ice cream
1 brownie
11 popsicles
They cry out to me late in the evening, a choir of sweetness-- all sopranos, singing their siren song, calling me to a rigorous regime of physical fatness.
But, I am so glad to know they are there. One by one, little by little, they will leave this cruel world. A cupcake on the back porch... a cookie shared with a friend... a popsicle for breakfast...
So, let's haiku about summer desserts today. The prize will be the same as last week-- I will make up a reasonable biography for the winner on Monday.
Here is mine:
Leelanau County
The "Twin Pines"-- a soft-serve joint
Vanilla and Cherry.
Now, you go! Make it around 5 syllables for the first line, 7 for the second, and 5 for the third.

Nine oatmeal cookies
left? Wow. You show great restraint,
if I do say so.
Peaches, raspberries,
Strawberries, blueberries, plums...
You knew I'd be here.
My birthday is in
National Ice Cream Month. I
Chose well, didn't I?
I always thought of
Rhubarb as a weed. Until
I baked it. Oh, yes.

The angels baked it--
A cake biscuit pillow with
Berries and whipped cream.
Rock salt fuels machine--
that and childrens hands on crank:
Vanilla ice dream.
(And Carrie,if you are baking, you know my number,if it contains rhubarb)Damn! That woman can cook!

Every self-respecting
Southern cook makes coconut cake
She entices from the porch.
I'd commit crime for pie
Rhubarb custard and butterscotch
and dream in jail: peach!

In Texas that's a year-round
Treat. Let's talk summer:
Blue Bell Homemade Vanilla
With fresh strawberries on top.
That, sir, is summer.

Note for the audience: while Blue Bell and Blue Bunny are both ice cream manufacturers with an affinity for azural alliteration, they are similar in name only.
Blue Bell is manufactured with love in the quaint country town of Brenham, Texas, where it has been since 1907.
Blue Bunny, by contrast, is slapped together Le Mars, Iowa...yuck. I'm sure the Le Martians are nice folks, but their ice cream is not out of this world.
Blue Bell is rich, creamy, smooth and delicious.
Blue Bunny is some of those things, but never all of them together.
Blue Bell comes in genuine, All-American 1/2 gallon containers.
Blue Bunny, comes (deceptively) in 1.75 quart containers... .25 quarts short of a 1/2 gallon.
And the list goes on...
For those of you who live in an area without access to Blue Bell, I warmly invite you to come, or to come back, to Texas!

For you the cows must chew cud
All other creams? Mere duds.
*Bearing in mind,I have not yet sampled Blue Bell.
