Confused About Lyrics, Part 7: Is this part of deficit reduction?
Here is the line in Sufjan Stevens' Chicago that totally baffles me:
Drove to Chicago
All things know, all things know
We sold our clothes to the state
I don't mind, I don't mind.
What the heck is going on here? Have things gotten so bad in Illinois that the State will buy your clothes?

I think Sufijan got arrested in Chicago and gave his clothes to the Feds in exchange for a spritely and brightly colored orange jumpsuit. He's a very mellow guy this Sufijan (his name doesn't begin with "Sufi" for nothing or end with Jan, meaning"God is Gracious"),and is trying to make every experience into an exponent of wisdom. Therefore good or bad,he doesn't mind. And,as all conditions pass away eventually, there is no sense getting your knickers in a bunch over it. I wasn't so keen on the voice of Sufijan, since I prefer a low, gritty growl from a singer or a sweet sort of crooning, but I loved the orchestra behind him. I have a question though: Do you think it would be too much and create too much ado,if I wore butterfly wings on my back along with an enormous hat on my head and carried a parasol ala La Belle Epoque to The House of Jesus? Ciao!
You know what I think? I think that they love Chicago so much, that they know that even giving their clothes away to "the state"...which in my opinion...is a state of mind...that they know they are going to be OK...b/c it's where they are supposed to be.
According to my daughter, who knows these kinds of things, it means he's starting over.
Now what he's starting over to do, I don't know, I don't know.
Now what he's starting over to do, I don't know, I don't know.
Sufjan is a smug, insufferable artiste who needs to listen to more Muddy Waters and Howling Wolf if he wants to sing about Chicago
