Please... help the struggling, snowbound Wacoans

As you may have read, Waco has been deluged with nearly an inch of snow, and things there have gotten very bad. Schools, liquor stores, pet-care facilities and other institutions have been closed for days. The streets are full of wrecked cars and orphaned children, left to fend for themselves in the cruel outdoors, where wind-chill temperatures are approaching thirty degrees. Looters have have been foiled only by the fact that food stores were cleaned out at the outset of the storm. Tigers and bears are now roaming the streets, picking at the remains of those residents who have been stranded in their cars.

It will be years, probably, before the city recovers. I have received terrified reports from friends there that some residents have resorted to cannibalism (which seems awfully soon), while others have taken to locking themselves into their homes and watching hockey on VS, a channel few knew they had in their cable networks. Baylor students, desperate to stay warm, have risked expulsion by taking up the last-ditch tactic of consuming alcohol.

Please, if you can, help the Wacoans. If we don't, there may no longer be a Waco to help.

Comments:
While the snow may have melted by 11 AM, the damage had been done.

Hockey on tv? It must be bad.

Consumption of Alcohol! Surely, God will smite the campus with another inch just for spite? And they probably Danced while under the influence, and even Played Cards! Truly, the devil is among us. Should you send a few missionaries to help save their souls?

Lutheran missionaries on snowshoes are on their way!

There is too much snow!
Obama has planned to start
Evacuation.

Is there a dropbox at which we should donate supplies? Perhaps some of the warm clothes we have discarded now that it has reached a balmy 30 or so in the Twin Cities?

Send cigarettes with the Lutheran missionaries.

The snow is melting as it is now 70 degrees, and Baylor just beat A&M in College Station, so we can survive by feeding on the tears of Aggies for a while. Crisis averted.

Here in the Deep North, our home is fully stocked with bottles of Leinenkugel's Honey Weiss Bier in support of the Green Bay Packers on this eve of the Super Bowl. Nevertheless, I'm willing to make a sacrifice for the sake of humanity, and will send a few cases with the Lutheran missionaries. The motto of my alma mater - Wake Forest University - is, after all, Pro humanitate!

I scoffed, too. Super funny that all shut down. That was until the huge oak tree in my back yard cracked due to the ice. Now, I have a huge hole in my den, living room and kitchen. Electricity is gone. Water pipes may be damaged. We can't even stay there. Having to deal with getting essentials, pet care and the whole idea of WTF to do with our house. So, yes, if the Lutherans show up, I would like some help.

As an Episcopalian in the Land of Lutherans, I would like to suggest a resource for people in Waco to learn about Lutherans before their missionaries arrive. It's a website known as Old Lutheran (The Center for Lutheran Pride - But Not Too Proud):
http://www.oldlutheran.com/

My wife once gave me from the Old Lutheran gift shop this fabulous Martin Luther bobble head doll (Note: They suggest keeping the plastic packaging as - I kid you not - a Martin Luther jello mold):

I tried to sail my longshop north along the Brazos to Waco (to burn, loot and pillage Christians, as my ancestors did), but got bogged down when it became too shallow. Texas is not a hospitable land to Vikings.

5:41--

You would be surprised at how good Minnesota Lutherans are with chain saws and drywall, so heat up the hotdish!

I myself was once trapped in Waco due to a wintry mix. Fortunately Prof Osler had beer.
