Thanksgiving Mayhem Thursday

I love Thanksgiving.

The picture above is from last year in Texas, kitchen-dancing with my sister Kathy after the big meal. Maybe your family doesn't kitchen-dance... well, then maybe you aren't being thankful enough.

Really, though, many people probably feel that I shouldn't mix Thanksgiving with politics (since Thursday is usually devoted to politics here). However, they mix quite well, thank you. This is a beautiful, good, and brave country, and part of what makes it that way is our politics. We achieve great things through representative democracy in the United States, and I'm proud to be a little tiny part of this big ol' country and that process.

What is there to be thankful for? I will mention one of the many things I am thankful for about our political system, but I hope others will follow with their own ideas.

I'm very thankful for a free press, and what it does in our political discourse. The range of media is broader than ever, and more views are represented than many thought possible. Have an opinion? You don't have to buy a newspaper chain or TV station anymore-- you can just start a blog. Or comment on one, if you don't have the time for that. There is much to worry about, of course, with the decline of newspapers, but I hope that the trouble there has leveled off and that newspapers have begun to find their way in this new and exciting world made possible by America's dedication to free expression.

And kitchen dancing. That, too.

And you?

Comments:
I'm thankful that when we have an election, the people who are not re-elected just go home.

I am thankful that I am not mandated to eat turkey today; and the silence in my neighborhood this morning as my neighbors have decided it is to early to use their rights to blast away at the local wildlife.

KungFu Panda debut in the Macy's Day Parade!

I'm thankful for the feeling that my vote counts and that I can buy a turkey to roast any time of the year I want, even if I only eat turkey at Thanksgiving.

There are too many things for which I'm thankful to list here, so I'll settle for the Constitution and our adherence to the rule of law. It's a good thing.

I am thankful for all of the normal, average citizens who get worked up enough about something to overcome the hassle, danger, cost and misery of becoming (and remaining) an honest public servant. They are out there, and the best of them still have their sense of humor.

I am also thankful that I have never wondered whether I am loved, and never wanted for people to bake for. :D

Christine! Kung Fu Panda is on!

I agree with Anon 1:12 . . . and I am thankful for how easy it is to travel anywhere in the world with an American passport: not simply the passport, of course, but the privileges and immediate credibility it bestows. Lots of people will do anything to get that blue passport.

I will always remember going into the US Embassy in Delhi--my first time into any embassy--and seeing the line of people stretched around the building before it even opened, waiting for their visa appointments or waiting to plea for something. It was very humbling to be a white woman waving that blue passport and walk in the front door past all those others.

Family and friends...

I'm thankful that my character has not yet been killed or maimed in the IPLawguy videos

"Yet."
