Woe is Detroit
Being from Detroit is like loving someone who breaks your heart the same way over and over again (which is perhaps the worst possible way to be heartbroken). But yesterday, in a forum much less important than the economic disasters driving the other ongoing heartbreaks, the Detroit Tigers found a new way to make Detroiters cry.
The professional baseball season now includes something like 495 games, and extends from February through Christmas, but somehow the Tigers and the Twins ended up tied. So, they played a one-game playoff for the division title. That game was tied, too, at the end of nine innings.
Then the Twins finally won in the 12th inning, a fact that will make the upcoming seven months of winter much better for the residents of Minnesota.
As for Detroit... well, we still have the Lions to place our hopes on!

Man, every time I think Detroit can only go uphill, it gets a little worse. Interestingly enough, I read an article yesterday about Detroit's food situation that offers an interesting solution to several of the problems facing the city right now. I don't see it ever happening, but it's interesting to think about the potential for change.
I watched the game yesterday. Just think about it. 2 teams each play 162 regular season games, end up with the the same record and face off. After 9 innings they are still 'even' Both teams left a lot of men on base. IT really was a great game.
I was watching the Twins game earlier this evening. They were playing the Yankees (well rested) less than 24 hours after the 'play off'. Hats off to the Twins, they just had a little more gas in the tank.

First off, I read that the Yankees got to pick whether they played today or tomorrow. I think it's very telling that they chose to force the Twins to play without rest right after flying from Minnesota for a prime time game. They couldn't have predicted the extra innings, but still.
Second off, what about the Pistons and the Red Wings? I know the Pistons are "rebuilding" this year, but aren't the Red Wings pretty good?
