Poetry Cavalcade 2009: Poem 15

Receipt in a Borrowed Book

The best part of that book
Wrinkled, dark, folded
More unsaid than said.
Like any great story
I fill in the gaps.

It was plain in its meaning:
One year ago yesterday
The Southwestern News Store
Gate B5, Dallas/Fort Worth.

That still, small moment
Just before flight
Do you hold your breath,
Or let out a sigh?

Comments:
Your poem's better, but here's mine . . .

I collect myself
Just before flight:
Feet on floor, head back,
Hands folded, closing the book . . .

Cross myself, inside
Always a prayer, humbled and thrilled
By flight
That moment an emblem
Of utter surrender
Fear and anticipation
Present and future fused
In stillness.

Beautiful. It depends on where I am going or who I am leaving.

That is beautiful, SG! I also say a prayer, for myself, the passengers, the crew. Those moments before and at lift-off are humbling indeed.

Excellent, SG.
