What? No jumbo shrimp at the party? And I'm fired?
It appears that things are a little down at White and Case, a New York law firm. The Christmas party isn't going to have fireworks this year. Oh, and they had to law off 70 lawyers and 100 staff people.
Things are getting more difficult out there in the practice of civil law. I have heard of cutbacks almost everywhere.
For what it is worth, though, jobs are still there in criminal law. If states get into serious financial trouble, there might be some affect, but it is rare to cut deeply into the ranks of prosecutors, and defense attorneys are always going to be needed (much as states may try to squeeze them). In fact, I have been looking for a tightening in the criminal law job market, and haven't seen it yet. Interesting... and encouraging, for those of my students who are going out into that market in the near future.

I have a really good friend whose first job out of law school was at White & Case. He left after fourteen months, because his job was something like negotiating contracts or liability issues or something for jet engines (which apparently don't come with the planes . . . crazy). Not what he'd expected to be doing when he went to law school . . .
It's not just White & Case. Thelen and Heller have folded, and a LOT of other firms are laying off associates and staff. Not a good time to be working in finance or real estate or securities...
I wonder if they will have any of those little tiny corn cobs? Like Tom Hanks eats in the movie BIG?
Crim is starting to get squeezed in Bexar County. More of the civil guys are looking to make a quick buck on appointments. Also, the County is floating a plan to contract all the court appointments to a single firm and our public appellate defender's office may get shut down. But if people are good, like BLS grads should be, some judges will still feed you appointments.
That dude should be on the football team.
