Golfer disses hockey

According to press reports, Tiger Woods told reporters that "No one watches hockey anymore." A few remarkable things here:

1) He said this in Detroit, where many people love hockey.

2) He's a golfer (albeit, the best one ever, and an incredible athlete). People do watch golf, but what they see are mostly overweight guys standing around, then shaky camera shots purportedly showing a tiny white ball flying through the sky. Look, Tiger's top competition includes John Daly, who not only smokes and drinks a lot, but does so during competition.

Comments:
If it weren't for golfers, hockey players would have the silliest clothes.

Equestrian riders have pretty darn silly clothes.

And the REALLY Long basketball "shorts" are quite ridiculous too.

On a different topic, some group is outside on the street here in DC today protesting something by playing drums. But they're not within my view, unfortunately. So I don't know what they want or why. But the incessant pounding is starting to make me a LITTLE CRANKY!!

Golf is a game, not a sport. It's like pool, or tiddlywinks. It contains a physical component and physical skill, but none of the exertion that is required of being truly a sport.

Real sports are like rugby, which is superior to American football in that rugby players feel no need to put on 40+ pounds of protective padding and take breaks between every play.

My rules for determining game v sport:

1. Anything where you can smoke and drink while playing is not a sport. Golf is therefore less of a sport than figure skating and water ballet.

2. Anything where you can negotiate the finer details of a contract while playing is not a sport. I've never seen a hockey player pull out his cell phone in the middle of the second period to discuss his bonus for next year with his agent.

3. Anything I'm willing to play is not a sport.

As much as you may not like it, Tiger is right. Hockey ratings are waaaay down (likely due the fact that Versus seems to have tons of games) and Golf's ratings crush Hockey and will continue to do so for the forseeable future.

Golf and hockey are both weiners. Roller Derby, particularly as it is performed in Austin, TX, is the lone true sport left.
Any athletic endeavor that does not include torn fishnet hose does not deserve to be called a "sport."

Tom, my question is though, which is worse? The NHL being on a network that few people either get or watch, or being treated as the unwanted stepchild on a major sports network?

I personally would rather have a network that embraced the sport instead of sticking it on “The Ocho.“

Golf is clearly a sport. It has the two key characteristics: 1. Objective competition; and 2. Multiple physical requirements, including hand/eye coordination, strength, stamina, etc. The following are sports, though not an exhaustive list:

Football
Baseball
Hockey
Rugby
Basketball
Soccer
Golf
Darts
Tennis
Cricket
Track and Field
NASCAR

The following are not sports, but may be competitions:

Cheerleading
Water ballet
Gymnastics
Dancing
Diving
Figure skating

The most difficult question is this: is boxing a sport when a knockout occurs but a competition when it goes to the judges scorecards?

RRL--

I think golf is a sport. It does take some skill. But, golfers shouldn't diss hockey players while they are visiting Detroit. It's just not a good idea.

Plus, why tear down another sport, that everyone has to agree is a sport?

One great thing about hockey is that the last 2 minutes takes about 2 minutes to play, unlike basketball or football.

Razor,

I couldn't agree more. As one of the few Texans that can actually truthfully state that he has been watching hockey for almost 20 years, I can say that hockey is a great game. I wouldve been a terrible hockey player though. Well, except for one friend I had in college that had a theory about only using really fat goaltenders in an effort to take up more space in goal. But I've let that dream go....

Pope,

I'm not sure which is worse. The problem with Versus is that there are tons of cable subscribers that don't get VS. In many places, you have to subscribe to some special sports package or elite tier to get the channel.

I agree that it would be treated as the "unwanted stepchild" on a major network, but at least in that instance people would get to see and it would create a bigger opportunity to rediscover the game.

The ideal situation would probably to put it on some second-tier network, but one that just about every cable subscriber gets.

1) The Oxygen Network
2) TNN
