New York 2

When I was in law school and took the train into the city, I came into a Grand Central Station that was very different than this. The side lobby was given over to real danger, and the restrooms were scary. Worst of all, probably, was that the windows were blocked off by large billboards. It was transformative to see the old girl for the first time with the windows uncovered, and that New York light streaming in. It is a beautiful place.

Comments:
That's a great photo. How do you get the contrast like that on B & W?

Would you attribute NYC's cleaning of its public spaces (Grand Central, Times Square, etc.) to Giuliani's "broken window" policy? Would that work in other American cities stricken with urban blight?

Alan--

Yes, I do give Giuliani a ton of credit for the change. That philosophy really did work.

It really is a nice place. I had some terrible excuse for BBQ (it was a lapse in my good judgment, to be sure) at Grand Central Station, but that is by no means indicative of how wonderful everything else is.

Then, of course, there's still Penn Station...
