What's Across The Street

Here at the Law School, we too often exist in our own little universe. Part of it is that we have our own driveway-- we turn left off of University Parks toward our building and away from the rest of the University. Unfortunately, there are some real costs to that isolation, in that we lose out in being a part of the culture and life on the other side of the street.

I may have this on my mind because the School of Social Work is having a symposium tomorrow on faith and the death penalty. I heard about it only through the school paper yesterday.

On the plus side, some of my best mentors and colleagues are on the other side of University Parks, including Bob Darden (Journalism), Blaine McCormick (Business), Deanna Toten Beard (Theater), Randall O'Brien (Religion), and Hulitt Gloer (Seminary), each of whom I work with every year on various academic projects.

How can we make this better? Should we?

Comments:
Two words: Faculty Frat.

Oh, wow-- are you suggesting we have a faculty fraternity with keggers and stuff? I'm in!

I just love the way that when Osler tries to start some serious discussion, his loyal readers hijack his heartfelt ideas into something hilarious. Faculty kegger this weekend? I'm in.

The Dada Drummer is in charge of jello shooters.

Osler--this problem would be solved if we initiated our idea for a post-tenure faculty "crossing over" ceremony in an old barn. Ahh. Another brilliant idea launched over Starbucks!

Hmmm... but where will we find an old barn...

As the emperor of ethics at BLS, you should know about the Business Ethics Forum taking place at Hankamer from Oct. 24 - Nov. 7. There will be speakers, case competitions, and more free water than you could ever hope to drink.

Easy answer: No. One of the best things about BLS is that it is autonomous. I think its physical separation from the University was intended to reinforce that autonomy. BLS is generally out of the political and religous fray that seem to plague Baylor University (at least over the past 5 years).

The way I attempted to stay connected to Baylor's campus-proper was to maintain a meal plan and study in the cafeterias about fifteen hours per week (double that during PC). Not great for the waste-line, but that's what studying on the treadmill in the SLC was for.

I miss the all-I-could-eat cookies, ice cream, raw broccoli, and watching the undergrads appear younger and younger each year.

As a townie who was not a Baylor undergrad, I probably would not have come to BLS but for its isolation from the rest of campus. But I recognize the advantages from more interaction with the rest of campus, so I propose that we move main campus.

It is probably better yall are way over there, out of the way, so no. don't fix it.

But if you really wanted to try, a sizable donation to the buildings not nearly as nice as your own would work.

Looking for an old barn (1245?)

I can set you up.

Dada--

It's true. I know for the fact that TheAdjunct has an old barn. Let's use it!

Be careful what you wish for.

Automatic admission of lowly pre-law undergrads into the law school? ;o) Haha.

Actually, you should give an automatic A to whoever can climb the Old Main tower buck naked sans climbing gear.

That'll get you crazies over on our side of the universe for sure.
