Key West Queries

Next week, I'm going to Key West for the NACDL mock trial tournament. I've never been there, and I have no idea what to expect. So far, here is the sum total of my knowledge of Key West:

1) Hemingway lived there.
2) Chickens are running around in the streets.
3) There are a lot of beaches.

Comments:
There's not much to do there.

What do you mean, "not much to do"? They eat these huge conk shellfish there. And drinking! All kinds. Visit the place where Hemmingway lived. But pack lightly, it's really always pretty warm and the humididity is always very high. Mildew is their national pasttime there. And shells. They have shells.

Never been there--but I hear there are lots of long bridges to get there.

Its more awesome than Louiseville, Colorado. Definitely not awesome.

I've heard that you MUST go have some Fried Conch while you're there. The Travel Channel said so.

Uh...kind of a liberal lifestyle there...all types. Hope you're not going to be there for Halloween, it's, well, different

Osler it is AWESOME!!!! There are tons of gay people there, but they have never botheredme THey actually make the place more FUN, I think. Key West is sooooooo beautiful It is soooo awesome you will LOVE IT. You can tour Hemmingway;s house and there are these cats running around it all over and they are all descendants of his cats and they all have 6 toes. BUt there is a bunch of touristy stuff...

They do eat conch there, and turtles and all kind of crazy stuff. Even alligator. The people are nuts too I love it there.

There are a ton of great restaurants, and there is real key lime pie you will LOVE IT I love even the drive there, like along the 7 mile long bridges and stuff. ALl of the houses are like on slats or sticks because of hurricane stuff. YOU WILL LOVE IT THERE. My mom was going to buy a house there but then she got sick and did not....

I spent a LOT of my childhood in Florida. My fav place there is Sanibel Island. and Captiva. If I could go live anywhere in the world it would be on Sanibel. It is my favorite place in the world.

Lucky! My wife and I once enjoyed a tour of the Florida keys from a 70-year-old man. He grew up fishing those waters (his dad, allegedly, was a squatter out there when he was young), so he knew exactly where to take us. The kind man piloted us around the islands in his rowboat powered by a removable engine.

We saw all sort of fish, a sting-ray, huge yaughts. It's a very delightful memory. We even venutred into the Bermuda triangle. Be careful, I heard you can get lost out there.

How is it that we only went to Dallas for our tournament?

BY the way... When we were picking names for our child, had he turned out to be a girtl, I had two in mind. Hadley and Oona. Bill hated both of these names. BUt there is a KeyWest Conncetion to one of them.
OONA was Eugene O'Neil's daughter's name, who later married Charlie Chaplin. But it is actually a really old Irish name, and Bill is Irish. It can also be spelled Oonaugh.

HADLEY was Ernest hemmingway's WIfe's name,. I think wife number two. Or maybe number one.

ANyway Bill LOATHED these girl names. so I guess it was good we had a boy. BUt watch out, next female dog...

When I lived in Miami I went down for a weekend and did one of those tours that tell you all of the quirky historical trivia. My favorite part was that Key West actually seceded in the early 80's and named itself the Conch Republic. That amuses me to no end. http://www.conchrepublic.com/history.htm
