They use the "nee" thing in our small town paper all the time. I had no idea what it was. (And I know you're doing it in a joking way, but it just makes the point that it's a weird tradition).
Megan-- it was a classic in the Grosse Pointe News of my youth as well. Of course, that is the same paper that was immortalized in the New Yorker for its classic headline atop a story which described a resident of Grosse Pointe Park who was running for municipal judge: "Woman Eyes Park Bench."
