Baseball
Am I good at baseball? No-- I'm terrible!
Do I understand baseball? Not so well.
Is my favorite team any good? No.
But still...

I love baeball; I get baseball...
If you are a real lover of baseball, you can go to a minor league game in your town and not care that your team. The guys are still mastering their craft.
You appreciate the fact that some of the guys will move on to the bigs and that others are just the supporting cast of characters on the field.
They all have the dream of making it to the bigs. Men playing a boys game.
There is no instant replay so we trust umpires, who are fallible, to call balls and strikes and outs at first base. And we get mad when they make a bad call (and they make many).
Let's go RAYS!

This is what I know about baseball: Mondays are $1 hot dog days at Target Field.
What more do you need to know?!

What I have learned about baseball coaching my son, who's in his last year of little league as a 12 yr old: Baseball is an incredible instrument to teach young men how to respond to failure, and how to focus on the few things they can control (attitude, support for fellow teammates), and cope with the many elements of the game they can't control (umpires, errors, etc.). When players are able to grasp and appreciate these humbling aspects and still have fun playing the game, it's a beautiful thing!

Carrie - I suppose you might want to know what is in that $1 dog, but then that would ruin the evening out.
Oh and insert your own words at the end of this statement: ....you can go to a minor league game in your town and not care that your team .......

If you can explain the infield fly rule to a 10 year old and make it clear, then you are a true addict! and may need an intervention.
Good idea Tyd here are a few more....
For the Love of the Game (cute Kevin Costner)
Eight Men Out (the Blacksox scandal)
Pride of the Yankees

Bang the Drum Slowly. What a good movie.
My personal favorite is Field of Dreams, which is not really about baseball, but about fathers and sons, and parents and childrens, and hopes and dreams. I loved the book "Shoeless Joe" first, and when the movie was made, even with a different name, and with a fictional author instead of J.D. Salinger as a character, I was anxious that it would disappoint. It did not.
But I vote for it.
Baseball, you might say, is not so much about baseball as it is a thread throughout the 20th century, connecting the past to the present to the future, and breaking hearts along the way (until the next day, when another umpire yells "Play Ball"! It is ballet, it is poetry, it is life.
