Political Mayhem Thursday: Light bulbs

Ok, so we have to switch to LED or fluorescent bulbs. Is good or bad?

This may seem simplistic, but I do think it is a question that strikes at some broader debates right now, such as the proper role of the federal government in commerce, and federalism.

Comments:
We have a mix of bulbs in our house, old fashioned incandescnet bulbs in 3 way switch lamps and CFL's in most of our canned lighting and floods. We are pretty happy with the mix. They also make CFLs now that look like old fashioned light bulbs instead of coils.

What I find difficult is trying to purchase the new light bulbs? There is no chart at Home Depot or Lowes that provides one with the a 100 watt buld = 'x'CFL' or x'LED' so I never know if I am purchasing the proper replacent bulb.

I realize that the CFL have some mercury in them and shouldn't be tossed out with the trash. I return them to Home Depot when they die. We don't have any LEDs in the house, but I plan to purchase LED Christmas lights as my old strings of lights die.

And at the end of the day I still want to use a 3 way bulb in my 3 way lamp and I don't think that option exists with CFL and LED technology.

Just remember, a government regulating the sale of dangerous, outdated technology is tyranny, but a government telling you whom you can or can't marry, or what you can do with your own pregnancy is fine.

Right on, Anon 9:15! And heaven forbid we should take care of those children we forced to be born when their mother knew she couldn't care for them. Why, thats Socialism! They don't need insurance or food or anything else, that's socialism!

Ah, logic - so outdated. So, so, - liberal.

From light bulbs to abortion and gay marriage in less than three posts.

But not the death penalty?

I would like to add that I have no idea with the idea of government promoting more energy efficient home technologies but mandating that I use the technology is a bit overboard. All three have there appropriate usefulness.

There are a lot more urgent things for them to deal with. Perhaps the death penalty to those who throw mercury tainted light bulbs into the land fill. I would like to see my local landfill police catch me.

Like Christine, I have a mix. As the old incandescent bulbs burn out I replace them with CFLs... on the theory that I will save money in the long run and do a tiny good thing for the environment.

And like Christine I am TOTALLY confused over all the varieties of "green" bulbs for sale at the grocery store, Target and the Home Depot.

Disposal is also a problem. Leaving dead light bulbs around until the next time I visit Home Despot is not an attractive option, esp. in a house with pre-schoolers.

And yes, for a three way lamp, an incandescent bulb is best.

Having said this I do not get the GOP complaint about bulbs. The government regulates products ALL THE TIME. Fireworks, booze, drugs, guns (yes still regulated), automobiles, appliances (remember freon), etc. etc.

We put those earth friendly curly q bulbs in everywhere we can They last a LONG time and save money. They have spotlight ones too for those can light things we have a LOT of those can lights in our house. The only REAL problem wiht them is that like for special occasions like Thanksgiving or wwhatever when you try to photograph the food and stuff Everything looks kind of GREEN.

Especially Gravy.

Love that photo!

Tyd - your gravy might in fact be green if you add to much sage!

I will say that the crop of CFL bulbs that I have in my apartment currently dates as far back as 2006 when I first bought a 20 pack of them. I take care to package them right when I move and I have yet to have to buy any lightbulbs for the last 5 or so years.

LED light bulbs could very well be the next best thing in lighting. The technology is making inroads in every market, with an LED bulb for any application. LEDs have a long list of advantages over incandescent and CFL lighting. A common complaint about compact fluorescents is the ramp-up time to full brightness. Instant-on CFLs provide light instantly, but still require time to reach full brightness. LED light bulbs provide full illumination from the moment they’re turned on. It reminds me of how compact fluorescent technology slowly dominated incandescent technology. There is a similar roadblock, as well; LEDs have outlandish high prices.
