Political Mayhem Thursday: Chris Christie
It appears that some Republican activists are really pressing New Jersey governor Chris Christie to run for president.
Part of the motivation seems to be disenchantment with Rick Perry. Some, but not all, Republicans seem disappointed with Perry's public appearances, while others don't like his policies on immigration. To my mind, it seems like Perry has met every reasonable expectation (given, my expectations were pretty low), so this surprises me.
So, why Christie?
And if not him, who else can challenge Mitt Romney?

The Republican Party is looking for a champion—a white knight to ride in and save the country (and the party brand). For some, that champion is Perry. He carries some baggage, but he doesn’t have “RomneyCare” hanging over him and he looks the part. To the far right-wing of the party, though, his views on immigration (i.e. educating the children of immigrants) are potentially disqualifying.
He is also Southern, and speaks with a Bush-like drawl. Christie, on the other hand, is a fast-talking Northeasterner with solid conservative credentials. Notably, he has governed in a state that is not decidedly Republican. As a result, he has gained credibility as someone who can work through the challenges of partisanship. Perry has, for the most part, governed in a one party state. I don’t expect Christie to jump into the race, but who knows what impact all the lobbying he’s currently receiving will have.

I do think Mitt Romney will win the nomination easily, and I also think he will be a good opponent from President Obama-- he will represent a clearly different vision, and set of values.
The conservatives don't like Romney for his policies (Romneycare is the most noticeable) and for his flip-flops on issues like abortion and gay rights. Also, many of them are also evanglelical Christians, and many if not most ev Christians, view the Mormom Church as a cult. They just don't like or trust him.
Perry is just not that smart. Hey, he even backed, Al "I invented the Internet" Gore, once upon a time.
Though many of the conservatives like Christie, he is too east of the Hudson. You can take the boy out of Jersey, but...
Marco Polo Rubio would be the guy, but he is, intelligently, waiting untio 2016.

Why do I feel like times seemed to have regressed? Last I checked conservatism doesn’t mean narrow- mindism (pretty sure that’s not a word) and it keeps me wondering... is the republican party today the same party that gave America, say, Theodore Roosevelt for a president?
Remember, the GOP leadership was NO fan of TR. He bucked the establishment and was heartily disliked by party bosses.
Christie is attractive because he is not a panderer

Just to let ya know, Anon 6:01- my new catchphrase is totally "He an enemy of America."
Seriously, like, twenty minutes ago, when I went out to mow the lawn, the motor on the mower wouldn't start. I tried pulling on it real hard and everything. Then I got frustrated, pointed accusingly at my lawnmower, and yelled "HE AN ENEMY OF AMERICA!" at it at the top of my lungs. And you know what? It felt awesome. Like, super awesome.
And I don't even think it matters that I'm not sure if my lawnmower is a he or a she.

As a member of the Lane Bryant Conservatives,I just love the fact that he carries a little extra avoidupois and that he looks like you could have a plate of Quattro Formaggi macaron and not have somebody raising their Kate Moss eyebrow at ya. I bet he drinks beer too. But now--does he believe in evolution? Because we can't tell what kind of a president he will be unless we know that. Time for dessert.

Yeah, it started. I hit it with this giant snow rake that I found in the basement, and I think that did the trick. It was probably because of all the leverage, since the snow rake was so long. Also, putting gas in it seemed to help too.
But about my name - not cool, man. Just not cool. I'm a highly regarded intellectual property lawyer in the Washington, D.C. metro area who specializes in coleslaw-related litigation. Except I never applied to the Virginia Bar. But I went to law school and I'm the only guy tough enough to do the tough slaw cases in this town, so I figure it doesn't matter.
I do have a friend named IPSlowGuy, though. He's not technically a lawyer or even employed, but he's the guy who puts up all those "Slow - Deaf Children Playing" signs all over. He's pretty chill.
