When Waco is stranger than fiction...
Waco has been a wonderful place to live. One thing about it is that... well, it stays interesting. Inexplicably, the President of the U.S. decides to live here. Then, one night people claim they hear an explosion like a rocket ship blowing up. It turns out that it was a rocket ship blowing up at a heretofore unknown rocket ship testing facility in town. Then, of course, we had the public tv station inadvertantly airing porn...
Most recently, the band Devo put up a billboard near my house, over by the Catfish King restaurant. I'm not sure why, but Carl Hoover did a pretty good job of trying to explain this. Here is Devo's own video on the subject:

"This is offensive to God, so I find it offensive to me." Is God ever offended? And if so, I'd hope that he/she/it reserves being offended for more serious infractions than a Devo billboard. Besides, God is too busy answering prayers for World Cup victories.

The Trib article had a good point at the end of it - is the "offensive to God" guy a real Wacoan? Where is he? He certainly isn't in front of anything close the billboard.
I wouldn't be shocked if he were an actor for the video. While it's typically not surprising to hear some sort of statement like that in Waco, I can't quite figure out what would be "offensive to God" in the billboard.

Waco's short-lived, minor league hockey team, the Waco Wizards, were also opposed by some Wacoans as offensive to God. I went to the opening match in the HOT Collesium, and there was a knee-high level of fog so thick you couldn't see the puck. Hooters was also opposed as offenisve to God. This is just another example of the Waco We Do! attitude, as long as whatever it is that is being done is not offensive to God.
Waco is no worse than the majority of Texas in that it contains people that find everything an offense to God, even other Christians.
Waco just gets crap for it because it harbors crazy paramilitary cults.
That said, I'm happy that I'm not living in Waco anymore. Except for my house. That was a sweet house in Hewitt. I like it better than my house now, but I could not get 24-hour authentic Mexican tacos in Hewitt. So it's a wash.
I'd still rather be in Austin, though.

ACG, the latest ultraright fashion is to deny the name of George W. Bush as an evil freedumb hater just like that furriner Obama and his secret Muslim cabal of liberals. Only true freedom fighters like Joe Barton and Sarah Palin know that to be free one cannot regulate business, or else they will do things like drill an expensive and dangerous oil well in deep waters and not follow those safety procedures causing an unimaginable environmental disaster. If only government had kept its nose out the market would have capped that well by now with its invisible hand.
