Haiku Friday: Graduation day

It's a big day. I teach Appeals and Habeas at 8, give the commencement address at St. Paul's at 10:30, teach sentencing at 11:45, rush over to the Vanguard practice, then give their commencement speech at 7. Whew!

So, what advice should I give 18-year-olds? That can be our haiku topic. Here is mine:

Care for good, not bad
Don't become that drunk old flop
We turn away from.

Sheesh, you all have to be able to do better than that... just make it 5 syllables in the first line, 7 in the second, then 5 in the third.

Comments:
Enjoy the day, kids,
Life gets better and better!
I love 55!

This much I know, kids-
Don't ever buy a Jeep, please!
Sadness, tragedy.

Bittersweet moment
Enjoy your summer, before
the real world begins

If I could offer
Just one tip for your future;
Always wear sunscreen.

You can be better
Than your history. Even
If dad was that flop.

All this advice is good. I don't feel like haiku-ing today, but the very basic bit of advice I can think of, based on the recent news about the lacrosse players from my alma mater UVA, is:

Be a good person. Know your weaknesses. If you're a mean drunk, get help, so you don't end up killing your ex-girlfriend in a drunken vengeful rage and ruin your life at age 22.

Sorry to be so dark, but that's all I can think of. Kind of the same advice as 7:39 Anonymous.

To Vanguard students:
Don't be seduced by money.
Life is more than that.
Bob

Be nice to your mom
Do not eat the yellow snow
Cheer for the Red Wings

Live Love Forgive Be
It is okay to fail really
Cry Heal Laugh Give Thanks

Nice, Woody. How about this--

Eddie Shack, touch guy
Took off after Bates one time;
Bates, Master Heckler.

Children don't do drugs
Don't want to worry 'bout
Sentencing guidelines
