Ebirt lives!

I was tipped off by GED3 that my undergrad alma mater, William and Mary, has been searching for a a new mascot. About four years ago, the NCAA denied the school's appeal to keep using their "Angry IPLawGuy" mascot. After that, the school unofficially adopted a green fuzzy thing-- kind of like a friendlier, less competent Oscar the Grouch-- called Ebirt (which is "Tribe" spelled backward). He appears in the video below at about 1:17, failing to read a book just like a real W & M student. I love Ebirt.

However, it looks like they may go with either a tree, an asparagus, or a bird. William and Mary doesn't exactly have a distinguished sports history, so any of those might fit. Legend has it that Lou Holtz left W & M after three years, saying there were "too many Marys and not enough Williams."

Comments:
When did we ever have an Angry Indian Guy marching along the sidelines? We've had cheerleaders in Green and Gold "warpaint," but nothing like the Florida Seminole and his flaming spear. And when was the last time you attended a Tribe football game?

Weren't you part of the group that started cheering "EBIRT OG!" due to the fact that they used to run that along the bottom of the scoreboard?

How weird is it that the NCAA made the College drop the Feathers from the W&M logo, yet let us keep the name "Tribe" (which the forward thinking athletic dept. switched over to about 20 years ago, dropping "Indians"). And no one has said anything about the Fight Song which refers to Indians over and over again.

I think Col. Ebirt was last seen about the same time as the Red Sox dropped "Wally The Green Monster."

I hadn't thought of "Ebirt... OG!" in 25 years... though perhaps it hadn't registered because of excessive consumption of adult beverages.

That said, IPLG is right... there was never an "Angry Indian Guy" during our time there. I just remember the interlocked WM with feathers.

Yeah - about time. Miami had to dump their Indian mascot years ago. In the mean time we still have a relationship with the Miami tribe.

I have a good friend hwo played football for W&M and then played pro football for the Tampa Bay Bucs back in the day when the team was really, really bad.

I vote for Ebirt! Very creative and much better than Red Hawk.
