A great development-- the Waco City Farm
I was surprised and happy to get a flyer from the Waco City Farm, a new sustainable community farm located on 17 acres in an industrial park off of Highway 6. They are growing a variety of veggies, and offer a big box weekly for $75 a month.
Of course, this isn't the first nice agricultural development in and around Waco. The World Hunger Farm has been doing many of the same things, with more of global mission of compassion, for many years.

Man, that's great news. However, a bushel of produce a week is a little much for me to eat by myself, and I eat almost nothing but produce. Hmmm.
I have heard about these sustainable Farm co op things and I think it is great idea and if you have one in your area you should support it! They had a thing on these kind of farms on the CBS Sunday Morning show that I watch each week..
I have heard that you do not get really your choice of stuff - they choose what they give you - kind of whatever is in season. However, it is all organic and great... I would love it because you know maybe you get some weird veggie but it would be a great opportunity to not only have your family try that vegetable but also find a cool way to cook it.
If i were you I would do that because it seems really great and you are lucky to have one near you! If you get too many veggies you could just give them away or donate them to some place.. OR it might give you an opportunity to learn about preserving food in different ways like canning or freezing or whatever OR you could make eight gallons of soup!
Or if you do not want to pay for the service maybe you could like volunteer there or something?

You know I do a LOT of hideous experimental cooking and there are some people who hate it but lot of people like the weird stuff I make. That bates guy seems like he might just about eat anything...Kinda like MIKEY on those old commercials . You could learn a lot while at the same time feeding a really appreciate guy who cannot cook at all..
If it seems like too much, get a friend or another family to go in with you on the monthly rations. Usually you get what is 'in season'. Eating and cooking local is very popular here in Durham. We have a bunch of restaurants that use almost all locally grown food. Really good stuff.
I have always grown tomatoes in containers in the summer and also my own herbs and lettuces. I am envious, but then I will help my friend Ida plant in April and May. I am free labor and get to share in the spoils. I am hoping to plant an Olive tree this spring and start up a berry patch.
Darn, now I'm hungry.

What kind of commie nonsense is this? Go buy your processed, packaged food at Wal-Mart! If God had wanted Americans to grow food sustainably he wouldn't have put corn over here!
Hey Tyd,
I picked and cooked Oyster mushrooms that were growing in my yard - talk about a risky experiment. We cook some pretty weird stuff as long as squash isn't involved. Unfortunately that is one of the easiest veggies to grow.

I have a BLACK THUMB a DEAD thumb BUT I have the corn lady down the street from me this farmstand thing and she always has weird stuff and I will buy something weird and get a recipe from her and it unequally turns out pretty well!
There are some hits like the butternut squash soup and the cherry clafouti and then of course misses like the cabbage soup YUCK that was awful .
SInce I have a four year old I kind of stick the basics but I am ALWAYS hiding al kinds of pureed veggies in all of our food. FOr ex today I made three days each worth of pasta sauce AND sloppy joes and I am freezing them The Sloppy joes have pureed carrots in them, plus peas corn and carrots. I call those SNEAKY Joes. The spaghetti sauce has also pureed carrot in it.
I steam them, then puree them and then freeze them and then add them to stuff like mac n cheese and soups and sauce and all kinds of stuff.
But we ALSO have a ONE BITE rule in our house. You have to try at least ONE BITE of something. THEN you can decide to hate it but you HAVE TO TRY IT!!!!
That rule does not always work but we try.
