Music query
I will probably go to one concert in Austin later this month. Which would be better?
1) Weezer (at the Irwin Center)
2) Ben Folds (outside at Stubbs BBQ)

This is a layup. Its gotta be Weezer. Stubs is a better place to see a show, but Weezer is a much better band and will be more fun.
I'm seeing them on the 21st in Dallas.

If Weezer's show is anything like their albums, you can expect about 35 minutes of music. I'd vote for Ben Folds.. the guy does a lot of interesting stuff live. Covers, reworkings of his old stuff, new songs.
Weezer hasn't released a good album since Pinkerton, and the band steadfastly refuses to play any of those song lives.
See Ben Folds. Though Stubbs is a better venue.

Hard decision. Weezer did hit an all-time low with Maladroit, but they're supposedly starting to play their old stuff. Ben Folds is really good too... This is one instance of my chronic indecision. Frankly, I might have an easier time deciding if it was something like Led Zeppelin (With Jason Bonham!)/Celine Dion Sings AC/DC.
Last night, I had a dream in which I went to the Ben Folds show with IPLawGuy, RRL, Poseur, Josh Zive, Dan Sorey, Lee Auvenshine, Prof. Serr, and... Antonin Scalia. It was very odd. For one thing, those guys (except maybe Scalia) are all much larger than I am. In the dream, I couldn't see the show at all.
I agree with tj....if Weezer plays mostly from Pinkerton, with a little Blue...then I would go see them over almost anyone...of course, i doubt this will happen...but still, I would go with Weezer
Scalia would be with you at the Opera. He loves the Opera. Really.
Go with the outside show, Ben Folds. Weezer has always struck me as a gimmick band.

Tough call, but Ben Folds has got to be the better live act. You never know what cool thing he's going to do next.
I think you've got an equal bang for your buck with entertainment, so the tie goes to the venue/scene. I'll take Stubbs over the Irwin center any day. I would likewise take the crowd at Ben Folds (at stubbs) over the crowd at Weezer (at a basketball arena). Come down early, eat at Jaimes Spanish Village across the street and enjoy some $3 Lone Star tall boys. Done and done.
The only good thing about shows at the Erwin Center is that the venue never sells out, so scalpers are left holding tickets and selling them on the cheap. It never fails. My record: Incubus: $10. Coldplay $15. Kelly Clarkson - front row $30.
"jonas said...
Don't do anything that involves Weezer."
Extra points for whoever got his "Jonas-Weezer" pun. (If you didn't, one of Weezer's most famous songs is "My Name Is Jonas)
PS: I am not Jonas, merely one who points out his joke to the uninformed.

PS: Speaking of Music, I was thinking about the lyrics to a Bob Seger song recently.
Fire Lake is probably a made up place, but why would Uncle Joe be afraid to cut the cake? Or why would anyone be afraid to cut any cake?

Wrong question. It should be Kings of Leon on Oct. 25 at the Austin Music Hall
OR
Spoon Oct. 13 at The Parish.
Me, I'd go with Spoon.

I've seen Ben Folds several times. I guarantee you will not find a more fun show than his. He involves the audience in a fantastic way. Plus, his songs are, by and large, better than Weezer's. Pinkteron was the last great Weezer album, whereas Ben Folds consistently puts out great albums.
I saw Weezer about 5 or 6 years ago at the Austin City Music Hall. It was a pretty good show, mainly because they played mostly old stuff. However, the Erwin Center is an awful venue for live music -- it's very spread out, so unless you get floor seats you will be very far from the stage. Because it's such a large, round building, the sound gets bounced around a lot, and it sounds muddy.
For that reason I would vote for Ben Folds. Stubb's always has a good atmosphere, and maybe you'll get to hear "The Battle of Who Could Care Less" -- one of my favorite Ben Folds Five songs

I have no idea who either of these guys/bands are. But wasn't Scalia in one of your dreams/nightmares before? Seems like Supreme Court justices are a recurring theme . . .or maybe it was in a repressed memory.
really??????
its a valid questions. I have many fears in my life.... The Snow Queen, flying monkeys, a room full of toddlers, being forced to enter a natural body of water, raccoons but I have never been afraid to cut any cake.
I have been afraid to cut a turkey, cut my hair, cut some other stuff.... but never cake.
WHY, BOB, WHY?????? WHY was Uncle Joe afraid to cut the cake?
