You go, Detroit!

I'm taking a brief break from posting happy commencement photos to note that my hometown has been named America's "Most Miserable City." Here's what it said on Yahoo:

Imagine living in a city with the country's highest rate for violent crime and the second-highest unemployment rate. As an added kicker you need more Superfund dollars allocated to your city to clean up contaminated toxic waste sites than just about any other metro.

Unfortunately, this nightmare is a reality for the residents of Detroit. The Motor City grabs the top spot on Forbes' inaugural list of America's Most Miserable Cities.

I'm guessing they won't be using that catchy phrase "This nightmare is a reality for the residents of Detroit!" in the promotional brochures.

Comments:
You know this reminds me of the time when I had a friend in MI who was the mayor of Trenton, Mich. He was always trying to boost morale in the city and he did a "Trenton Motto Contest."

My entry was "Trenton: You’ll Smell it Before you See It." Of course it did not win, but you know at some point you just have to laugh at these stupid lists and titles and awards because what else is there to do? The people in Detroit are pretty stuck there now, because even if they wanted to get out the houses will not sell. The auto industry has tanked... The Mayor is a Perv I guess now.... I mean My brother and a few people I know still live there and I always tell them how nice Oregon is. How there are jobs here, and good houses for reasonable prices and good schools, and its very pretty and everyone is really nice and it never ever snows hardly and it has SO VERY MUCH to offer and non of them will even listen you know? They are all dug in I guess, they do not want to move.

However, I do know also that if you look at the rest of the list of the MOST MISERABLE cities You will also find San Francisco, Philadelphia, Chicago, a whole bunch of other great towns... they all made the top ten... SO who cares if Detroit is number One???

My idea is that they should just EMBRACE it you know? I mean, if your house is decreasing in value and it will not sell, and you are afraid your job will be eliminated any minute, and there is crime in your neighborhood, It is BAD. BUT...you have three choices - you can complain about it, OR just do your best to live your life and enjoy your family and friends. You could take a bath financially sell everything and get out and move to someplace else for a better life, but No One I KNOW there wants to leave despite how bad it gets. SO IF you refuse to leave, then I would say, update your resume, get an alarm system, some gummy bears, Tivo and a Satellite Dish, and maybe, I dunno, a weapon, or some booby traps for your front porch or something, and then just sort of hunker down, and stay home at night thinking of a good Detroit Motto.

Here is My Entry:

"If Bill Bonds lives here, it has to be good!"

Interestingly enough, while Detroit has one of the highest incidents of background radioactivity, it also has one of the lowest cancer rates in America.

"Come to Detroit, where the nightmare is a reality!" Nice.

Detroit has great sports teams. And Greenfield Village is way cool. I could look at the old cars in the museum all day.

I remember going to Greenfield Village every year with my Girl Scout troop and staying the weekend. Like 100 5th grade girls, all kind of hyper from maple sugar candy, patiently schlepping thru the boring stuff in the village like Webster's house (the dictionary guy -zzzzzzzzzzz) just so we could get to the thing we all wanted to see at the end... Lincoln's chair. Gross huh?

The old cars are cool, though.
