Jed (or at least his blog) in the news

It looks like they have a good old fashioned controversy over at Boots and Sabers, which is run by one of our Baylor Law grads (who was a great student) and a friend of his. It seems that someone posted the following as a comment on their blog and was subsequently arrested:

“Looking at those teacher salary numbers in West Bend made me sick. $60,000 for a part time job were you ‘work’ maybe 5 hours per day and sit in the teachers lounge and smoke the rest of the time. Thanks God we won on the referendum. But whining here doesn’t stop the problem. We’ve got to get in back of the kids who have had enough of lazy, no good teachers and are fighting back. Kids like Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold members of the Young Republicans club at Columbine. They knew how to deal with the overpaid teacher union thugs. One shot at a time! Too bad the liberals rip them; they were heroes and should be remembered that way.”

The guy who was arrested for posting this comment is a former teacher's union president named James Buss. Apparently, he thought that posting "anonymously" meant that it couldn't easily be determined who he was. It's surprising how many people make that mistake.

Comments:
That is precisely why I want everyone to know who I am when I post--no misunderstandings about anonymity. There is no such thing. All computers leave a series of tags (albeit invisible to the naked eye) that clearly identify which computer produced any given "anonymous" blog comment. Food for thought. If I write a thing, I'm the author for good or bad. End of story.

Isn't there also the issue of whether the guy should have been arrested for posting a vague threat on the internet? Yes, he sounds nuts, but at what point can you/should you be arrested for posting something on the internet? The intersection of free speech and protecting the public . . . this case sounds rather blurry to me.

ECTOR, Tex. -- Three juveniles are in custody after police say they threatened Ector school students and staff. Officials cancelled classes on Thursday as a precaution, and are informing everyone of the threat on Friday.

Candice Ostrowski was shocked when she heard the news that three of her fellow students threatened to harm her teachers and friends.

Officials were just as surprised to hear about a threat of this magnitude in their community.

School officials received a call Wednesday afternoon of what they are calling "a terroristic threat" on the school. After a preliminary investigation, Ector and Fannin County authorities found evidence on a student’s MySpace page confirming the rumors.

That’s when authorities say they acted quickly.

Because they couldn't arrest the individuals Wednesday night, Ector ISD officials cancelled school Thursday, telling students and family it was due to a gas leak.

"I had to come up with something that was serious enough that you will close school down," Gary Bohannon, Ector ISD superintendent, said.

Ector Police arrested three juveniles Thursday in connection with the threat. They are being held in a juvenile detention center. A hearing on Monday will determine what charges will be filed against the three.

What exactly was he arrested for?

People should at least use a proxy server--one based offshore for some semblance of anonymous protection.
