Constabulary Notes From All Over

With school starting, I have ignored a host of important news stories dealing with criminal law. At such times, you can always get top-flight analysis from Doug Berman over at Sentencing Law and Policy. In the meantime, I will make the following lame attempt to catch up:

1) Man Burns the Burning Man

This guy to the right (shown in his booking photo) has been charged with arson for burning, uh, the burning man. This raises some interesting points in the law, since the point of erecting the burning man is to burn him anyways. More importantly, though, is the question of whether it is wise to paint your face like the devil for your initial appearance...

2) Senator Larry Craig lookin' for men's room sex

It's hypocritical for environmentalist Democrats to fly around in private jets. It's also hypocritical for family values conservative Republicans to cruise for gay sex in airport men's rooms. It's downright hilarious when said law-and-order politician says he pled guilty by accident. I only hope that it emerges that in his booking photo he had painted his face like the devil.

3) AG Gonzalez resigns

It's good news, generally, that he is stepping down, because DOJ does not need the distraction. They really do have some important work to get done, folks. Meanwhile, I think there is a good argument to made, based on recent experience, for an AG who is somewhat independent from the President.

4) Ms. Teen South Carolina

As a U.S. American deeply concerned about The Iraq and The Asians, I can't thank Swanburg enough for first bringing this to my attention. We live in a culture (U.S. America) that horribly overvalues physical attractiveness and meaningless answers, but at least sometimes that makes it a really, really funny place to be.

Comments:
1. Not sure I understand much about the "Burning Man" other than the irony. Would guess that this is actually what "Goofus" looks like from your prior post.

2. Of the possible places to "cruise" for gay sex, I would not have guessed that the airport was No. 1 on the list. (maybe that's the only place in the airport where there isn't a line)

3. I can't think of anything nice to say about this situation, so I won't say anything.

4. On this topic, I can only respond that in South Africa and Iraq, they dont' really have the thing that you might need to find US Americans looking at when they were better educated, and world peace. Thank you.

The Larry Craig story makes me shake my head for a lot of reasons: like how the cop who arrested him knew what he was doing? Those hand signals sounded pretty much open to interpretation to me. Was the cop experienced with people who solicit gay sex? And if so, why are police spending time on little stuff like that when they could be spending time investigating unsolved murders or something? I mean, I really could care less whether someone solicits gay sex in a men's restroom, as long as there's no physical violence or coercion involved.

But yeah, Craig's reaction was funny . . .

And the Miss South Carolina thing was just sad. She had so obviously been coached to relate any possible question to Starving Children in Africa and World Peace that she got off her script, poor girl. Can you imagine your stupidest moment ever being broadcast AROUND THE WORLD? I saw in on CNN-Europe this morning in prime news time! She must want to bury herself in a hole and stay there for about 20 years.

Craig seems to have gone off script himself. Other than having his mute wife at his side for the obligatory press statement, he's wandered far from the accepted storyline. The proper response in a situation like this is to:

-"Accept Responsibility for my actions," (while implying that he isn't really guilty of anything)

-Blame alchohol/painkillers

-Seek counseling

IPLAW Don't forget rehab and community service...
and the obligatory "ELLEN " or JAY LENO appearance... UGH
Maybe I am a total airhead but I do not see why the gays have to always be IN the closet or why is there even a closet???

Its so stupid I know its against God I guess or whatever but isn't that up to that person and their god??
And who cares if a person in public life is gay? I want my elected officials to be smart and trustworthy and hardworking. I don't care so much who they sleep with.

Swissgirl,

The police weren't looking to catch gay men meeting each other in mens' rooms. They were attempting to investigate complaints that men were engaging in blatant sexual activity in the airport mens rooms. I agree that that there are more severe problems in our society, but really, I'd like to be able to take my seven-year-old child into the bathroom without having to explain why there are two dudes (or two people of any persuasion) in one stall making strange noises.
Of course, I'm a little sensitive about this story as it occurred in my fair city of Minneapolis.

Thanks for filling in the details about the Craig arrest, Sleepy Walleye. What seemed like an arrest on pretty slight circumstances makes more sense now. It did occur to me after I vented my rant that it would be pretty creepy for a child to experience a guy or guys in the next stall trying to get his attention under the stall, or hear strange noises, as you say.

I found it somewhat interesting that different publications included different excerpts from the police officer's report. The longer version included additional details that leave no room for doubt as to what Craig was up to.

His personal life would be personal IF he wasn't advocating and voting for laws that affect people's personal lives.

If he had a libertarian record, this would not be a big deal, but unlike the "wide leg" stance he allegedly took at the MPLS airport, his views could be considered narrow.

And as Sleepy Walleye points out, it was a public place.

Well, that's what I get for just reading Yahoo news, and a day or two late at that!

I agree totally that Craig should take responsibility for his actions, and that what he did--and his denials of it--are a big deal if he is typically conservative and votes the family-values, anti-gay line.

Yeah you guys are all correct

1 If he really IS gay then he should not be all ANTI Gay in public and then secretly gay in private. That is just weird. Pick a lane and drive int it.

2. If you are gay or straight or whatever, keep innocent bystanders out of it Like Sleepy said, I feel sort of the same way if it is legal do what you have to do but keep it in PRIVATE.

3. What is it about Men's Bathrooms that all these alleged sex things take place??? That is like ht e LAST place I would go for like a DATE youknow? I mean, at least dinner and a movie, or like out dancing or something or whatever Not "Hey I really like you.... Are you doing anything tomorrow night? You wanna meet in the men's room of the B concourse of the St Louis airport?"

I mean how cheap ARE these people???At least go for COFFEE or something What - its like five bucks for a Starbuck's?? ANd they can hang out there all day and night THere are ALWAYS weirdos hanging at Starbucks. i mean why THE BATHROOM????? Am I missing something?

Tyd--

Yes, you are missing something.

Meet me in the last stall of the Men's Room at the end of the B Concourse at the Portland Airport tomorrow at 9 pm, and I will explain it to you.

No Can do. I already am meeting this guy I met over the internet at Starbucks....

Worst job in the world = sitting in an airport restroom all day waiting for someone to proposition you for gay sex. I couldn't make it 30 minutes with a copy of the sunday NY times.
