In the Mountains...

I am off to Salt Lake City for this conference, which should be FanFan-tastic! (That's a little in-joke for fellow sentencing geeks. The oft-forgotten companion case to the Booker opinion was US v. Fanfan).

I'm a big fan of Salt Lake City. It is a fascinating place in many ways, but right now is kind of a ghost town, because the Jazz are playing. Why is the Utah team called the "Jazz" anyways? And does anyone else see irony in the fact that the biggest star in the Mormon state is named "Boozer?"

In the past few years I have learned more about Mormonism (in part through David Corbett and Craig Pankratz) and hope to visit Temple Square during this trip. Most of the time, though, I will be hobnobbing with other sentencing geeks, and attending many panel discussions on the interpretations of 18 U.S.C. 3553(a). For me, that's fun.

Comments:
The Jazz were originally in New Orleans, where the name made sense. Just as Brooklyn (Trolley) Dodgers and Minneapolis Lakers made sense.

Hmmm... and you know all this because these are all trade names?

IPLG is a font of all kinds of intriguing info. And much appreciated.

and wasn't there a Washington Senators team?

But the Braves--does Atlanta make sense for them?

Swissgirl,

There were two Senators teams. The first one moved to Minnesota and became the Twins, and the later one moved to Texas and became the Rangers. As far as the Braves go, that team was originally in Boston and moved to Milwaukee before moving (again) to Atlanta. Not sure how much sense the name makes, but there you have it.

Campbell

Haha, half my high school's jazz band in WA used to be Mormon. It doesn't make *too* little sense.

I can't tell you how jealous I am. If you want, you could drive 30 minutes to Tooele to say hello to my family for me: My little brother got home last night from a mission in New Zealand, and I'm dying to see him.

But such is life.

Enjoy Utah for me.

-Craig

Thanks, Campbell, for filling me in on the baseball-team genealogy. Funny how those teams move around and change names, taking on the character of wherever they go . . . there must be an analogy in there somewhere . . .?

Charles used to call it phen-phen.

But then Charles also called after his missing habeas book, "Here, little Yackle, Yackle. . ."

There are Mormans down the street from us. They are one of the nicest families I have ever met.
My best friend's sister is a doctor and researcher at the U of Utah in SLC. She is from GP by the way. We all thought she would hate SLC because she is so liberal but she loves it now. She is even raising chickens now, and makes her own goat cheese.

BTW I am purposely not talking too much about my house debacle. I know it bores you all.

Tyd! We are all DYING to hear more about your house! Really. Please bring us all up to date on Spencer, Donut, luthiers and your house debacle!

Makes me jealous--you get to visit my home and I don't! SLC is a great city, but Park City is even better--you should drive up there if you get a chance.

I was also going to tell you about the Jazz, but iplawguy beat me to it. The funny thing is that most sports teams that have been in Utah since we got the Jazz have ended their name with "zz" (Starzz, Buzz, Stingerzz, etc.) or at least had "zz" in the name (Grizzlies). Just a little useless info for you :)

For obscure sports trivia, there's only one place to turn...

My favorite moves (which haven't been mentioned yet, because the Lakers, Dodgers, and Jazz are three best ones).

- Boston Redskins moved to Washington (named for the Boston Tea Party)

- St. Louis Browns became the Baltimore Orioles

- The original Baltimore Orioles moved to New York and became the Yankees

- Colorado Rockies became the New Jersey Devils

- Winnipeg Jets became the Phoenix Coyotes

- Hartford Whalers became the Carolina Hurricanes

- Quebec Nordiques became the Colorado Avalanche

- Philadelphia Athletics moved to Kansas City and then to Oakland. The White Elephant mascot on their sleeve dates back to their time in Philly.

- Seattle Pilots became the Milwaukee Brewers

See Anonymous i would LIKE to believe you.... but I cannot help thinking that my life is so boring that all of you lawyers out there changing the world etc doing all of that sentencing stuff....

but here is the latest news....

not ALL of it just a small one...

Today is our ninth wedding anniversary. Our house blew up and we have no babysitter and we have meetings tomorrow and all kinds of stuff today so we are not going to do much. ALso Spencer gets out of school at 1 and he is going to come into this house like he was shot out of a cannon. Whomever (whoever? ) said the TERRIBLE TWOS were bad was crazy the threes are WAAAAAY worse. Yesterday he brings home this cricket in a bottle (it is his Habitat, Mommy) with leaves and dirt and stuff and a screen tapes over the top. We are supposed to babysit this poor creature for a week. THANK YOU, TEACHER GINA!!! BLECCH!!!! At night Spencer is supposed to put it in his room and at night listen when the lights go off if it chirps. THis is better than the egg and chicks unit when he was trying to break eggs all over the place to find the chicks. Or maybe that was Donut. Anyway we hope that Mr Cricket lives until his release date, otherwise we are going to have to go find a new cricket and how the heck are we gonna do this? ALso teacher Gina informed us yesterday that Spencer plays with his food at lunch every day and makes a huge mess and he needs to work on his table manners. That was not TOO embarrassing but whatever I mean he eats applesauce with his hands because that is how WINNIE the POOH eats his honey out of the jar, and if Winnie the Pooh does it, it has to be okay. You don't see Winnie the Pooh using a fork, do you?

Still we sent him to school after practicing all yesterday with his little plate,. fork and napkin and his WInnie The Pooh Placemat and he is going to try hard to remember all of the rules.

Meanwhile Bill and I are going to use the two whole hours we have to celebrate our anniversary by going to lunch at goofy Red Robin. Since SPencer keeps falling out of his big boy bed in the middle of the night he woke us up at like 3;30 AM last night, and brought himself and almost the cricket with him to our bed. I am so sleepy right now I am probably going to fall asleep in my Caesar salad, but that is ok.

We are happy, somehow.. nine years later. I had no doubt we would be happily married. I did not anticipate the 150 lb dog the exploding house, or let's be honest Spencer arriving... But they are all here and its all good.

Spencer has even stopped referring to the Toyota as the EX ADDITION - he could get his mind around the fact that the Expedition went away and is never coming back. OH and I got the baby powder smell out of the New Used Toyota.... well ok I did not get that smell out but rather added a new overpoweringly strong entire bottle of Mandarin Orange Green tea scent...

probably went a little overboard.. you can smell that car coming about 4 blocks away....I guess I went a little TIM ALLEN. BUT you know.. it does NOT smell like baby powder anymore!!!
As GW Bush would say MISSION ACCOMPLISHED

Tyd, you rock. It's good to hear from you. And Happy Anniversary, cricket and all.

I met some Mormons--a couple of young women--doing their mission work in Germany. I had just said goodbye to an American friend, gotten on a train, and immediately was faced with two young women striking up a conversation with me. (They had overheard American English and started talking to me). At first I was taken aback by how quickly they spoke to me, but after a few minutes I was engrossed in conversation. They were lovely--very calm, focused, not upset when I said I was pretty comfortable with my own relationship with God. They were remarkably mature and grounded to be so young. I don't know the full purpose of doing the mission, but it would seem to be a real maturing experience unlike most anything else.

Swissgirl-

A mission is unlike anything, and you have to go through it to actually understand it. From what I hear about Practice Court, a mission is a two-year (eighteen months for women) practice court program which allows eight hours of sleep a night. In Practice Court you get less sleep, but it doesn't last nearly as long.

But the maturity of missionaries generally isn't the result of the mission (There are some who have to grow up real fast or the intensity of missionary work is too much, so for them the mission forces them to grow up).

What you saw and sensed was probably the result of years of preparation by those two "sisters," which is generally the case for missionaries.

I forgot that Spencer goes to two different sessions of pre school. he goes not only to the MW part but also the TU THUR part. which means guess what? Yes we brought home yet another cricket today. Except this one's habitat was shaken not stirred on the way home and he does not seem to be doing very well.

YIKES

Poseur,

The other reason the Boston Redskins were the Boston Redskins was that they played at Braves Field, home of the Boston Braves baseball team. It was the Braves who were named for the Tea Party Indians. That franchise was around a lot earlier than the short lived NFL team that decamped to DC.

You forgot to mention that the Yankees were initially known as the Highlanders.

Yes, add Grizzlies to the list of team names that don't make sense in the new cities. At least the Senators, Expos, Pilots, Houston Oilers, Browns (baseball and football) and assorted hockey teams, esp. the Nordiques, had the class to change their names when they moved, unlike the evil Indianapolis Colts who shall never live down their abandonment of Baltimore.

"Warriors" made no sense in Philly or Oakland... I mean "Golden State."

Of course, "Kings" made some sense in Kansas City due to the KC Royals baseball team, but it's really a pretty lame name for Sacramento

Oh, I know all this because I am a font of useless trivia. Not unlike others on this blog.

Quote from Tydwbleach "Anyway we hope that Mr Cricket lives until his release date"

I believe Mr Cricket is pulling for more lenient sentencing guidelines.

Update:
No official confirmation but a source close to the investigation has reported that Mr Cricket has been "Legs Up" since he arrived. The death took place some time on the way home from preschool, in the back of the grey minivan, and after Spencer proudly announced "Daddy I shook it!"

In other news the Anniversary lunch without the child did not go as planned as a certain laptop is apparently on Mountain time at the moment and was showing one hour behind. Thus the lunch became a dinner, with the child, still at Red Robin. Spencer mostly kept getting up from his kids meal at the table to stare at and stand on the TV that is in the floor of the front of the restaurant. I ordered what I usually do: Asian chicken salad and soup. Bill got his usual cajun something or other burger, and spencer threw his crayons on the floor. Donut got drunk again, and after several frozen Mango margaritas and two mojitos, he hurled garlic fries, nachos nad sexist comments at the waiter and started a fight with the assistant manager. The police were called and we were asked to leave and to please never come back to Red Robin, not even when we send you that birthday club thing for a free burger.

Donut was released to our custody and as a punishment he has to sleep with the dead cricket, and then on Saturday morning go pick up trash along I-5 in a yellow vest with the other DUI people...

Do I have the most obscure trivia about sports moves? How 'bout them Fort Wayne (IN) Zollner Pistons, named after the owner of the team, which (surprise!) made pistons. Alas, with the move to Detroit, they became the Detroit Pistons, and the name still made sense, but some of us still think of the team as a Fort Wayne team.

Wow, I didn't know that about the Pistons. Great story.

While we're busting out obscure sports nickname stories... the first team to have a mascot was the Pittsburgh Pirates. They were called the Pirates because they were the first team to pay more money to a player on other team, thereby enticing him to sign with Pittsbugrh. The move was called piracy by the early press, and eventually, the name "Pirates" stuck.

And thanks the tyd for pointing out that Indianapolis shall never be forgiven. Actually, nothing against Indiana, just the Irsays.

The Kings actually makes fine sense in Sacramento. Did you know that Sacramento is home to the Delta King, the riverboat husband to the well-known Delta Queen of Mississippi River Mark Twain fame?

Tyd,
Donut and Spencer need their own tv show, like Starsky & Hutch...only Starsky is actually a criminal. But you would have to get Donut a red Ford Tornio.

Donut could also play the part of "Huggy Bear" quite well, I think.

This AM Teacher Gina told us that we have to have a funeral for the stupid cricket.

Yeah sometimes I wonder about her.. but of course Spencer learns every day to respect himself, others his parents, his friends, and his environment. SO we are going to bury the cricket tonigt and talk about how we enjoyed him while he was with us. Until he was violently shaken to death inside a a Sprite bottle.

AS for the TV show Spencer and Donut are going to have a show on the Fox network this fall called SPencer and Donut. They drive around in a Red Mattel Power Jeep and solve crimes. Spencer is having a little trouble learning his lines especially all of the words to the song "Baby I'm A Want You" but other than that it is going well.

It was hard to get Donut insured to be on the show. He has a checkered past. Let's just say he pulled a squirt gun a la Phil Spector on a couple of Kindergarten girls, he has been in and out of rehab and has a $40 dollar a day paste eating habit. He is forever banned from several casinos in Las Vegas including the Mirage, and is headed for trial next year for putting a contract out on Ronald McDonald.

However he is great on the show, so far.

Cricket Funeral plans:

The viewing will take place between 9-10 AM with a short and hopefully respectful eulogy by Donut

Wake from 10-11 AM

Viking Funeral from 11:00:01- 11:00:30

In lieu of gifts donations can be made to the Center to Reform Inadequate Criminal Entomological Trial Sentencing (C.R.I.C.E.T.S)

We MUST have photos of the Cricket Viking Funeral!!!!
