DAY TWO: CRIPPLING ICE STORM CRISIS CONTINUES!

We are about to enter day three of the CRIPPLING ICE STORM here in central Texas, and all hell is breaking loose. Today there was a trace amount of snow, forcing the closure of schools, warnings to avoid the toxic outdoors, and the fervant stockpiling of food.

Of course, Texans were able to react to this crisis in their trademark fashion: By racing around at breakneck speed in gigantic SUV's while tailgating one another. The theory seems to be that if you drive really fast in your SUV, you will spend less time on the SUPER-DANGEROUS roadways. Sigh. It makes me want to move to Minnesota where they have real snow, people who know what to do when it snows, and no eight-hour-long practice court exercises.

Comments:
This morning in southern Minnesota: six inches of fresh powder and minus 9F. And nothing closed. And even as I write this, the crippling ice storm rages outside my windows like a rabid dog, barking to get in. Oh, the horror of it all.

I think you're hearing some of Osler's crickets. They might have followed you home. They heard you were stockpiling food

Yeah, school closures...for everywhere BUT Baylor.

GRR.

Today in PORTLAND:

we had 3 inches of snow. they started broadcasting the local SNOW WATCH 2007 crap at 5 AM. I am NOT joking it went on three channels until NOON> THere was a brief break for the soaps, and then MORE STORM CRAP. Get this there was no TODAY show. Now VIEW REGIS, MARTHA, RACHEL or any other stupid daytime shows that I woudl have liked to watch since I was "trapped " in my house. There was NO OPRAH and NO ELLEN!!!! Just hours and Hours of the same stuff. THe snow is still falling. !!! All of the Portland Metro schools closed today and they are ALL Closed tomorrow as well. all of the parents and kids in my hood spent the day OUTSIDE like ALL DAY sledding, making snowmen, running around in the snow. My job interviews tomorrow have been postponed because of the snow.

THREE INCHES. No one could understand why I did not want to go outside and frolic in the snow with everyone else. I was like "ARE YOU CRAZY???? I grew up in MICHIGAN!!!! I spent like 30 years in the freaking snow."

Everyone had fun but there were TONS of accidents. Part of the problem here is that the Oregon answer to a "big snow" is that we should all put CHAINS on our cars. THEY DO NOT HAVE SALT for the roads. (Bad for the trees) They brought out these HUGE plows today for THREE INCHES OF SNOW. THey do not even know what to do with them. What killed me was the SEVEN STRAIGHT HOURS of local coverage on three channels by the "STORM TEAM" like ALL DAY. IF there had been a terrorist attack today, or if they had found Jimmy Hoffa, or if Dick Cheney sang Karaoke in front of Congress today, NO ONE would know about it. I mean I found things to do, you know.... while my family was out looking for clothes and eyes and a hat for the snowman, and sledding and running around like insane frozen people, but this was INSANE I mean I am NOT trying to sound like a big CRAB here today... I know I do.. but this is SOOOO CRAZY!!!!!

I have never EVER seen anything like this in my life.

Difference is, in MN there is SALT. I was amazed when I got here (to TX) that they don't put salt down. That makes driving so dangerous even if you do know how to drive in snow etc.

Minnesota would welcome you with open arms.
A report on MPR this morning stated that few Minnesota law school graduates are taking jobs in the largest highest-paying law firms of NY, DC and California. The reason: they don't want to leave Minnesota (so say the Minnesota law schools).
You asked about snow in March...
The prevailing MN wisdom says that Feb is the Month with the lowest amount of snowfall, but March is always good for one monster blizzard.
5" on the ground in my yard right now. We're at the end of a cul de sac so the plows pile all the snow in front of my house. The kids love it.

Not just salt - lots of slag on the roads in Minnesota. Slag is a filthy mix of sand, salt, ground moose antlers, and surplus Wisconsin cheese. It allows us to drive our hybrids at reasonable speeds as we commute from our communes to our non-profit public service workplaces.

I correct my earlier statement.

ICE DAY! Yippee!

OREGON STORM WATCH DAY THREE:

1. Third Day off of school.

2. No one is going to work either.

3. Third day of NO TODAY SHOW as the local three channel STORM WATCH continues.
I am NOT EVEN joking.
