The Olympics are almost here!
And can the opening ceremonies in Paris hope to match this moment from London in 2012?"
Probably not, but we can hope. One great thing about the Olympics is that all of a sudden we feel very invested in sports we know nothing about. Fencing? Sure! Beach Volleyball? Love it! That thing where they cross country ski and then suddenly start shooting at things? You bet.
True: the Queen parachuting with James Bond was sublime. But I think the Paris Olympics succeeded precisely because they didn't try to over-top the British. Having the parade of athletes coming down the Seine...and Celine Dion's L'Hymne à l'Amour...in the rain...with her coming off a debilitating disease...put the Paris Olympic opener in it's own category. A definite win.
The queen parachuting out of an airplane? With James Bond? Oh… No way can any other opening ceremony compete with that. Best. Opening.EVAH
