Haiku Friday: Breakfast

I think breakfast can be the most poetic of meals.

Let's haiku about that today-- tell us what you eat, how it looks, maybe a description of your favorite breakfast ever... here, I will go first:

Pancake House, near home,
Bacon thick as summer heat
Coffee and best friends.

Now it is your turn-- just make it 5/7/5, syllable-wise, and related to breakfast!

  3. A Second First Communion

As my prayers for all are to enjoy the blessings of Passover and Easter, I ask your generosity in allowing me to recount a special moment I shared in yesterday.

The ‘Story of New Christine’ that the Professor posted last September came full circle after an unexpected meeting with a young mother and her ten year old son at a cemetery last summer. Cole is Nikki’s biological son and he and his step-sister Emily received their ‘First’ Communion last evening in a small church named Faith Lutheran. A ‘First communion’ for Emily and a ‘Second’ for Cole.

Cole’s mother, a devout Lutheran, had upon marriage, graciously consented to have their children baptized and raised in the Catholic faith of her husband. Cole’s father’s struggles with alcoholism and a bi-polar condition brought a premature end to his parent’s marriage. Although entrusted to the care of his mother, young Cole, in the Catholic tradition, received his First Communion at an earlier age.

Upon his mother’s remarriage a year and a half ago, a new blessed, blended, Lutheran family was born and Cole has two more sisters. Emily, the older of the two, is in the same grade and seven months younger than he. This winter as Emily and their friends from Cole’s new church began First Communion classes, Cole asked his mother (and Sunday school teacher) if he was permitted to take classes and receive, once again, the Eucharist with them as brothers and sisters in faith. That wonderful day was celebrated last evening and they shared that blessed moment with me. . .

Tears filled my eyes knowing a young man considered the fellowship in Jesus with his ‘new’ sister and his ‘new’ parish friends and not the name above a church’s door, as the invitation to the Lord’s banquette table – an invitation also offered to each one of us. Cole’s example demonstrated God’s love is unconditional and poured out for all.

As we reflect upon Jesus’ suffering underway this moment and the new life and Joy promised through His Resurrection, I ask that the example of Cole and the children and young adults we are blessed to have as part of our families – part of God’s family on earth – are also celebrated in our midst. There is so much their love can teach us. . .

God’s Blessings to each of you during this most Holy Season. . .

    Smears butter jam on croissant
    Sips cafe au lait.

    She walks in the rain
    Smells violets rhyming jazz
    With rose.Old men smile.

    Toast like a raft floats.
    Apricot jam seals it,sweet,
    In bowl: hot latte.

    Mama clucks in her robe
    And produces a boiled egg.
    Oranges on sill.

    We sit in the sun's
    Kitchen,warmed,ink brown eyes are
    Opening slowly.

    Soon we begin our
    Going.Meandering,yet
    Always together.Yes!

    An icy moon at two,then
    She remembered: Dead.

    He was dead.She had
    Seen it. Eyes closed,body limp.
    Rubyred speared form.

    A jar of spice bought
    Dearly dignity in death.
    Matzos,her breakfast.

    A sip of water
    From another jar.Hurried
    To meet the others.

    The sound of sandaled
Feet,He would not hear lying there.
    Such Light! Angels.What?!

    No Lord,just linen.
    Wailing pierced tomb.He is not
    Here.Risen! Risen?

    By lilies,He Was!
    Skin,breath,eyes,voice.Real.Oh!
    Embrace.Heart explodes.

    This changes it all.
    The game goes,an always love
    Encircles all.Come!
