Haiku Friday: The Heat

Crikeys, it's hot! Even here in Minnesota, it is getting into the 90's, which creates visions of the Apocolypse for Scandanavians, apparently. Out east, it is really unbearable, and they lost power for many days in some areas, as well.

There is a lot to say about shimmering heat... what it does to people, how it always seems to surprise us, how it may be caused by RRL's smoking, as a metaphor... all of it. We're casting the net widely.

Here is mine:

I step out the door
And gasp a little; step back...
Maybe I'll wear shorts.

Just make it about 5 syllables/7 syllables/5 syllables, and the winner will get a bio here on Monday.

    even in the woods
leaves wilt high upon the trees
    conserving moisture

    breathe, the air is dense
    The sky hazy with ozone
    sweat evaporates

    ground, atlas of cracks,
    Storm clouds on the horizon
    hopeful for relief

  4. There is no room for
me AND the air outside, please
    open the window.

    There are dew points and
    heat indexes, just new ways
    to say it's sure hot.

    Long run down right side.
Sweat drips my cheek. I breathe.
    Sweet summer's heat swells.

    eating unripe orbs

    The sky is hazy
    Return, Carolina blue
    A hawk soars above

    ~*~*~*~
    barefeet on pavement
    ouch, ouch, blistering, ouch, ouch
    tar upon my heals

    Laundry dries outside
    no breeze, lifeless, colorful
    Thirty minutes, done

Too much hot air in this town
    Is Congress to blame?

    Emerge from cold car.
    Traverse the asphalt furnace.
    Arctic blast at door.

    Frozen foods numb me.
    Pay and prepare for return.
    Will I make it back?

    Bravely I greet the
    Suffocating wave of heat.
    Each step roasts my feet.

    Groceries loaded.
    Cart returned. The AC on.
    Sunday ritual.

  12. My phone tells me all
the weather of the homes of
    loved ones. Hottest here.

    Hotter than Texas,
    South Carolina, Virgin-
    ia, and Hell, I'm sure.

    Although, I hope I
don't have any loved ones in
    Hell. Still hotter here.

    Eschewing play.His tongue hangs--
    One drop of water.

    Only serves to conduct heat--
    Dreams palm trees, breeze,sea.

    My father wore cowboy
Hats in summer in the field
    114.Face angry red.

    We took bleach bottles
Froze with water to the field.
    Weeded 'til noon sun reigned.

    Way across gravel road,his
    Eyes glittered sun-love.
