Waco musings from Nashville
Let me recommend to you former WOTY Scott Baker's recent musings on the demise of the Waco Hippodrome.
For you out-of-towners, the Hippodrome is an old movie palace in the center of town that has been used for all kinds of arts performances, but ran into financial trouble this year and has been closed. It's like a death in the family for many Wacoans.

Pretty interesting. We have two similar venues in Tampa and St. Pete. In Tampa it is the old Tampa Theatre - complete with balcony. They run old movies, arts movies and host concerts - It's an intimate environment and works well. They even have a beer and wine license. Nothing better than going to a movie and enjoying a glass of wine with your popcorn.
In St. Pete they have The Palladium. This was converted and refurbished about 10 yrs ago and once they got it up and running/programmed it was then passed to St. Pete College (a wannabe school). They have a great website and are constantly programmed with jazz and small musical performance groups. The Florida Orchestra plays at a larger venue - The Mahaffey theater; also converted and refurbished several years ago. All of these smaller venues seem to work well.
These intimate venues can work if they are programmed properly and in my mind should be preserved when possible. They help define and provide character in the community. It would be ashame for Waco to lose this landmark.
All of these places remind me of the old Punch & Jusy theatre on the Hill in GP. I miss that place. Woody Allen movies and Rocky Horror - those were great days.
