Jobs and the Baylor network

I've been talking to quite a few students this week about job-finding, and I get the sense it is a tough market right now.

One thing I have been thinking of is strengthening the network of Baylor grads who have gone into criminal law, particular in DA's offices. It's a project I have been pondering for a while, spurred on by Tom Nowak, who is an ADA in Dallas.

In short, I would think about an informal organization of Baylor grads in criminal law. Perhaps we could have a one-day conference back here once a year (with CLE credit!), and an email newsletter. What do people think of this idea?

Comments:
I think that is a very cool idea. For BLS grads who want to practice in Bexar County, we now have an alum in the DA's office and I'm happy to help from the criminal defense side.

Excellent idea! Sign me up.

I think it is a great idea for all you criminal types, though I'm inherently suspicious of anything Tom Nowak comes up with.

You should be suspicious of anything Tom Nowak comes up with. Watch out for that guy. I'm sure he'll read this comment and send me an e-mail about it.

Great idea though.

I think it would be great, especially if we could get some equal representation from the defense side. Not all of us want to do prosecution.

It's not like I'm plotting to overthrow the government....yet.

I'm all for us doing something informal to start, but our school needs to come up with things to do that will get our name out a bit more and in the process raise our reputation.

It seems like Osler and the alumni are the only ones who understand this because every idea we've ever put forward seems to go nowhere with the admin.

Joe I thought we already had some alums in Bexar County. And Dustin...I know where you live...maybe you should be suspicious.

Where else do we have ADA Baylor alumni?

There are plenty of Baylor alums, both prosecution and defense, in East Texas.

This is funny. I was just about to be one of those students who comes to chat about future jobs.

I, like everyone else that has posted, think we should do this.

Justin--

I think you are right about the defense side being part of it-- it's just a smaller part of the group in terms of sheer numbers.

Count me in, I'm an ADA in Montgomery County (the county directly north of Harris).

Andrew James

I'm there.

Dustin wouldn't happen to be a BLS alum living in Waco, would he?

I'm an ADA in Bexar County who spent about three years on the defense side prior to becoming a persecutor. I think an organization of criminal alumni and interested students is a great idea, and I don't see any need to divide it between defense and prosecution. Ultimately, we practice in the same arena of law and share many common interests. Collegiality is a virtue both sides could use some work on. Count me in.

No, Dustin would not be a Baylor alum living in Waco. Sorry to disappoint.

Are you interested in non-Criminal alumnus as well? I think it is an excellent idea for those in and around the peripherals of the criminal sphere.

Osler, from what I've read, you've introduced me to a questionable internship coordinator or whatever the title is!

By the way, would you mind writing a letter of recommendation for me? Please e-mail me an answer. Serr said he will write one. I figured it'd be best to have the two crim oriented professors write the letters. I just don't see my performance in Torts relating. I tried to catch you in your office this morning to ask you but failed.
