Something new at Baylor

Yesterday, something very unusual (for Baylor) happened on campus. There was an actual protest rally, against a big coal-burning electrical plant that Dynergy wants to build near campus. There were lots of students with signs and one guy dressed as a coal plant, and an interesting array of speakers. Pictured is hero of writing Bob Darden.

One really incredible part of it, though, was the placement of it. They set up a little podium under this big old live oak tree, with branches going out every which way. At about the third speaker, the sun came out, and cast this beautiful light on the whole scene. It was a remarkable setting, and whether this was intended or not (and I'm sure it was), reinforced the message of the protest.

Comments:
That's a wonderful tree. And hopefully the power company will come up with another energy source. Is it windy in Texas? How about some wind farms? Or you've got sun, lots of sun, right?

Curses--that was me--I still don't understand this browser!

Were there counter-demonstrators supporting the power plant? That always makes these things more fun.

Did any of the speakers call anyone a Macaca?

IPLG--

Neither. It's not like we're in Virginia or something!

Interestingly enough, I don't know anyone who SUPPORTS these coal-fired power plants who doesn't work for TXU or some other energy company. Even those folks talk about building plants in a way you tell a kid to eat his/her vegetables...you may not like it, but you've got to do it.

The science has long since left the dirty-coal burning technology of the 1800s behind ... but there are fractions of pennies profit to be made per kilowatt hour, so the power industry has mounted a ferocious and expensive defense. Texas would be in the top five pollution nations in the world if it were a country. We're #1 in a lot of bad things and last in a lot of good things.
But I'm with you -- it was refreshing to see even a fraction of Baylor's mostly wealthy, mostly white student body think about something beyond the "Bubble."

This little bunny enjoys not being covered in soot.
