The Drug War and The Wire

Justin Scott sent me a link to this fascinating story about the television show The Wire and the drug war in Baltimore.

No city in America, probably, has been as adversely affected by narcotics than Baltimore. The efforts to fight drugs, at the least, haven't worked. I think there is a legitimate debate on whether or not narcotics, in whole or part, should be legalized, but there is no longer much legitimate debate on whether or not our efforts to fight and eradicate the drug trade have worked. They haven't.

Comments:
This show, THE WIRE has to be the DARKEST most depressing show ever on TV in the entire history of the world. My husband Bill LOVES it. The finale is coming up this Sunday, and I am glad it will be over.

Its about these cops in Baltimore that deal with the most horrible awful things, like Russian hooker smuggled from overseas in cargo containers... drug gangs murdering people all over town and then hiding the bodies in abandoned houses so no one will ever find them..

This latest thing is that the cops are so desperate for money that they make up a fake serial killer and tell the media about it to get more funding... so they can focus on the real crimes. The cops are alcoholics, divorced, depressed, the city is a hellhole, the neighborhoods have no hope... its just THE MOST depressing show ever.

Honestly as bad as any city REALLLLLY is it could NOT be as bad as The Wire. Bill says that I watch equally dark depressing things on Court TV but to me at least they are REAL... I am not sure how that is better.

Osler, are you advocating jury nullification for drug crimes?

Dallas DA-

No, they are over the top on that. The problem is the legislation on the federal side. I really don't see a lot to change in that way on the state side.

I can't say much about the show itself, since I've never seen it!

Whaaa????? You NEED to see The Wire, Osler. It's amazing. If nothing else, you'll feel better about Detroit.

It has a really good theme song though, esp Season 1 it was THe Blind Boys of Alabama singing it THen they keep the same song but change the artist for the following seasons. The end credit song stays the same though and it is good.

It will TOTALLY make you feel better about Detroit... seriously.. Makes Detroit look like Disneyland...

Seriously, go to your nearest Blockbuster, sign up for an account if you have to, and rent the 4 previous seasons. Watch them all this weekend. You'll be glad you did, and it will be time well spent.

Dallas... Time Well Spent?I respect your opinion, but I have to disagree. it is probably IMPORTANT to watch esp if you sort of working in that field kind of - but TIME WELL SPENT, to me... is uhmmm.... Well its just VERY VERY depressing...

Osler I would say... find a weekend when you are really depressed ANYWAY, and then MAYBE it will not bum you out too much...

But then I spend my free time with a goat, so what do I know?
