What Waco Needs is...

I get kind of excited whenever I see a new restaurant about to open in town. Most recently, I hopped over to the new Pei Wei, and really like it. My favorite restaurants, though, tend to be those which are owned and operated by the chef, such as 1424 at Washington and 14th, which is a great place in an old candy factory, where Bob O'Farrell not only cooks your food but checks on it as it is digesting.
So what else do we need? Tom Featherston often bemoans our lack of a Poppadeaux's. For a long time I didn't think that sounded so great, but I was assuming it was a dough restaurant. What do you think we need?

Well, I liked Fiesta. But maybe my standards are low living in Washington, DC. Iplawwife, who lived in California for 15 years, tells me we don't have good Mexican food around here.
Actually every town needs a good Coney Island restaurant. Does Waco have one? It is one of my few gripes against the Twin Cities that we can't get a decent chili dog or loose burger. Other problems: snow in April and the Metrodome. Otherwise its perfect here. Ha!
1424 was in my faves too until the menu prices went up but the quality of the food did not. Now, its like 25$ for Tilapia which is the sea equivalent of catfish. I think we need some good local pizza that isnt papa rollos
Pluckers and Cafe Brazil for the late night crowds. I would also appreciate Macaroni Grill and Texas Land & Cattle.
There's an excellent Mexican food place on Hewitt Drive: Taqueria Jaliscos de los Altos. It's always a good sign when the cook staff doesn't speak English.
Chipotle (a McDonald's subsidiary) for Burritos? Poseur, you know you can get better Burritos than that even here in DC at Burrito Brothers. There MUST be a place in Waco that serves better Burritos than Chiptole. Iplawwife says the best burritos are sold from trucks parked by construction sites.
Featherston is right on - we need a pappadeux and pappasitos.
other needed restaurants:
- texadelphia - can't believe we don't have a philly cheese steak restaurant/stand on campus or even in the city.
- freebirds/chipotle (unfortunately neither franchise)
- more ethnic food options (not more mexican/tex-mex, but maybe an indian food establishment, vietnamese pho house, mongolian bbq, etc)
- Fine burger dining (like a fuddruckers - but more like Beck's Prime)
- fine dining seafood (not w/ a latin twist, or general fried seafood platter)
- local pizza place - (why don't we have a pizza by the slice stand on campus - we must be the only campus in the country w/o a NY pizza by the slice establishment close by/on campus)
- chicago style dogs (Cpt Wizzbang's comes as close as you can w/o leaving the skin on - but a good ol fashion midwest dog topped w/ banana peppers, olives, lettuce, tomatoes, mayonaise, and a side of chilli cheese fries - would be great)
- cafes/diners w/ normal diner hours (cafes close too early, and the diners are inconsistent)
- 24 hour establishments (even just a 24 hr coffee only shop - but something other than denny's or ihop - cafe brazil is a good example)
- what about a Zen? different from pei wei, more convenient, and in my opinion, well superior to pei wei which is simply the trendy panda express.
- gyro place - sure we got that random diner that serves frozen hummus and swarma served on paper pitas - but a good normal gyro place like a miltos from austin or Niko Niko from houston.
- greek food - yannis is too far - this would provide a seafood establishment, a gyro house, pizza place, and general mediterranean food assortments - grape leaves anyone?
- chic-fil-a closer to campus?
- more thai, more vietnamese, less "chinese"
on a different note - we need lounges here as well - we have bars and clubs - how bout a lounge?

Waco could use some good Mexican...granted I was spoiled by going to undergrad in Austin, so I am used to like 50 options for Mexican food.
Chipotle is a must. Last year a group of us drove to Georgetown, because it had been so long since we'd had it. The manager there claimed Waco was getting one...but it sure hasn't happened.
Pappadeaux's would be good for Waco.
ERhine.

Have y'all read the e-mail regarding our national trial advocacy ranking? 6 spots below South Texas and tied with UT. I understand the argument that these types of rankings are arbitrary, but isn't trial advocacy what we are supposed to hang our hats on? Also, is PC some big secret we hide from the legal community, or is it merely not respected?
Notes on the above comments:
1. There's a Chick-Fil-A in the basement of the undergrad Student Union Building.
2. Local burrito stands are better - it's just finding one where I won't get shot. We DON'T need a Chipotle - I'm sorry, white rice on the burrito works in a pinch, but if I wanted white rice, I'd go eat Asian food.
3. For Mexican, Ninfa's always is a good choice. For more traditional Tex-Mex flavor, try El Conquistador on Waco Drive, Jaliscos on Hewitt Drive, or La Fiesta on Franklin Ave.
4. Pizza stand on campus? Try Sbarro in the SUB basement. I realize it's a fast food mall rat joint, but it'll work in a pinch...
5. Someone always has it worse. I went to an NCAA D-III school for undergrad which had NO eating establishments in walking distance from campus. Baylor/Waco is great compared to that.

there are some pretty good mexican restaurants in Waco:
Adriana and Jennett's Waco drive off 18th, in an old KFC
Taqueria Arandas corner of 17th & I-35
Lolita's on Franklin & 19th.

I think the answer is that outside of some people in Texas, no, people do NOT know about practice court and all that goes into it. We do nothing to promote it.
If you want to eat well and experience some Waco variety, join the Clean Plate Club which offers a weekly meal (everyone goes dutch) and you dine with the Cheif Judge of the United States District Court for the Western District of Texas, the United States Magistrate Judge for the Waco division, several Baylor Law Professors and many law students. Former members have included beauty pageant contestants and a top 15 finalist on ABC's The Bachelor. The Clean Plate Club's next goal is to get the 1992 NCAA Division I National Championship's daughter to join us for lunch. (I think she is merely a rumor and doesn't exist). Our next meal is Friday. Call 750-1519 and ask for Mr. Davenport to find out the time and location.
How can you not mention Double R Burger? Kitok's? George's for God's sake!!Waco does not need another chain restaurant, what we need is a Central Market or Whole Foods....and it's sad when the best sushi I can get is from HEB. I thought Freebird was a Skynerd song. God I'm ancient.....
Dubl-R Burgers is quite good. I'm bringing a college friend in early for my wedding to treat him to a 4X4: Dubl-R's specialty w/ 4 patties and 4 pieces of cheese. I'm confident my friend will meet the challenge: he once ate three triple Whataburgers in one sitting.
*A 24-hour restaurant like Seattle's 13 Coins or Austin's Kerbey Lane.
*Bring back the Shoney's, please...
*Krystal or White Castle, but actually near Baylor this time?
*Good seafood.
*Less chains. When the likes of Cheddar's or On the Border is making a "Best of Waco" list (notable exception: ninfaritas), there's something really, really wrong.
*Re-open Vitek's.
*Is there Indian food? There should be.
*More delivery services that aren't pizza, horrible Chinese, or wings.

I'm with Mrs. CL - SUSHI!
And, no one mentioned my favorite restaurant - Baskin Robbins!
What about... Taco Bell? I'm not sure that even registers as Mexican in the East Coast, so doubt it would work in Waco!
Does Waco have a Starbucks?!

Red,
Not only does Waco have several Starbucks, it has one with a sign visible from the interstate, a la a Stuckey's or a truckstop. Very impressive.
I myself was asked to leave a Starbucks in Waco due to an impending Wintry Mix.

--Late post..
Iplawwife REALLLY wishes there was some place in the City of Waco that served Diet Coke, as opposed to Diet Dr. Pepper. She did NOT believe me when I went out to get drinks at a Baylor Basketball game and returned sans Diet Coke. But it's true! The only choices were Dr. Pepper, Diet Dr. Pepper, Pepsi, Sierra Mist and something called Big Red.
Diet Coke Afficianados would understand. Or so I'm told
